Wishbone bushes

Featured Replies

Can anyone advise on the below:

Took my car in for 60k service and to have it checked out as there was a clatter sound over bumps at slow speeds. Whilt there had new wishbones fitted as the garage stated the bushes were very worn. This didnt solve the clatter sound and the garage said they couldn't even hear this.

4 weeks later took car to another garage to see if they could find this noise, which they diagnosed as exhaust mount which required welding back on. This mechanic also notice a lot of play in the wishbones. The wheels were moving back and forth and upon harsh braking would clunk loudly.

So car went back to original garage today and they have just informed me the wishbone bushes have been ripped apart so they have been replaced by another set of wishbones. However these are now VAG wishbones, which I thougb I was getting in the first place. :(

The garage stated that they think the vehicle has lowering springs on as the wishbones do not sit flat, they are at an angle. I am not aware if the car having lowering springs. and it doesnt appear to be lowered to myself. Surely even if the car was lowered the bushes would last longer than the 2-3months maximum they have been on the car.

It sounds like the garage has fitted some aftermarket wishbones which werent upto the right standards. :thumbdwn:

I do trust the garage and they have always been spot on with previous work on my cars.

The link below shows my car, does anyone reckon it looks lowered compared to

their own VRs's?

If I'd have read up on bushes I may have gone for some powerflex ones instead of replacing with new wishbones.

Thanks

My car is making the same noise from the front end. Going in for a service on Tuesday (66k service). How much are the wishbones?

More than likely to be the anti roll bar drop links that come off the shock leg to ARB, about £25 a side iirc

Looking at your pics i would say your car is sitting as per standard ride height and do not believe it is lowered. The wishbones sit at a angle on standard ride height so not sure what the garage are talking about. On lowered cars the wishbone will start to sit more horizontal or possibly even lower depending on how much the car is lowered.

I thought so. Hopefully I just had a faulty set of wishbones or poor quality aftermarket ones and these VAG ones might be a little better quality.

It is not the wishbone at fault but the bush in it. The aftermarket wishbones would be to standard tolerances and not sit the car any different in my opinion. However the bush material in the wishbone may be weaker and this may have caused earlier wear or more damage to the rubber in the bush mounting. You have option to either replace the wishbone that comes with the bushes. Or replace just the bushes. If you are getting a garage to do it then they will probably charge you more than the cost of a replacement wishbone just to change the bushes on your wishbones. Aftermarket wishbones like GSF are ok, or go Dealership for piece of mind.
