Engine Noise

Featured Replies

Noticed last night that there is a ticking sound from the engine while it was running (just been started and lift ticking over), not noticed it before but never been stood at the side of the car before while it was running (usually driving it :D )Is this normal? Can't remember it on my mates golf gti :( .

Darren

Hydraulic tappets. Sounds a bit like a diesel rattle?

Is it like the same ticking sound you hear when you've driven for a long time and shut the engine off? My previous car (Renault Laguna) used to do that, but I have yet to notice it with the vRS...

The ticking noise I can hear is after it has settled down from start up, engine is running nice and smooth but there is this anoying ticking, noticed it when sat in traffic today on the way into work, so the engine then was nice and warm and been running for a while. Car has got to go in for a new tailgate latch soon anyway so I'll mention it then.

Cheers

Hi,

Mine does the same too, I asked about this at the time on Briskoda and was told it was normal. It is a circulatation valve located just above the washer refill bottle on the left hand side of the engine bay. I got it replaced under warranty but it still does it so I've just learned to live with it (thought I had given up the diesel when I traded it in!! lol)

Cheers for that Hugh, was getting worried there might be something wrong with the black beasty :( . Think I'll still mention it when I'm at the garage though, I'll just be expecting the "that's normal mate" reply now ;) .

No problem, I would do the same too and get it looked at or replaced. My dealer was quite friendly about it and wasn't at all 'arsey' in any way if that makes sense. The job itself is a 10 minute lunchtime fix so there should be any hassle involved with courtesy cars etc.

P.S Judging by the name, are you a guitar man perchance??

cheers

:D Yeah, love my guitars. Was in a position to buy my dream guitar last year so I did, bet you can't guess what it is ;) . I have a Fender Strat, Ovation semi accoustic and a Vox amp not AC30 though I'm afraid. All I need to do now is learn to play :D .

Darren

Hi Darren,

Best of luck with the guitars, I'm sure with that amount of pro-gear you'll be a fine player. I've played since I was a kid and currently (like yourself) own a nice 58 RI LP, a heavily self modded-50's RI tele and I'm currently building another tele. I had acouple of Marshalls but sold them off last year so I am 'between amps' at the mo'!

cheers

It's probably the injectors - you can hear this ticking with most cars with EFI if you stand by them when idling. It's just louder on some cars than others. My Octy is the same.

I play bass a ephiphone flying v! very very rare in bass form, an american import!.

The noise may be camshaft tappets. When u driven for a long time and turn off the engine is nt that the sound of the engine cooling down as it expands from heat?

Had a Mk2 golf Gti, tick tick tick (hydraulic tappets), had an Audi 100 2.2e, tick tick tick (hydraulic tappets). Have a vRS tick tick tick (hydraulic tappets). No problems previously. Just an annoyance, especially in golf

On the subject of engine noise I wonder if anyone has experienced this ? The other day when I started my car (1.8T)there was a very brief (half second) metallic clatter from the engine as it fired up . It happens usually first thing in the morning . Any ideas ?

P.S. I have a lovely white 1966 Fender Strat

Just like Jimi's Electric lady!

I think there's a thread that talks about the 1.8t engine sounding like a diesel on start-up
