Featured Replies

hi something quick and easy i hope i have a superb elegance 2.0 56 plate can anyone suggest what oil to put in as im a taxi so i do about 1200 miles a week so would like good quality oil and all so what size socket i need to undo the sump plug so i can change the oil as i need to buy one thanks

Petrol or diesel? I use Castrol spec VW506.01 in my diesel. It isn't cheap stuff!

The sump plug on the AWX diesel is 19 mm AF (when you've fought your way in.)

Why not oil extractor? Sealey TP69 is my current favourite.

You extract more oil with extractor than via the sump plug (you can also get it out of oil cooler and oil filter housing), and the job takes about 10min incl filter change and is much cleaner. Plus you do not need a new washer for the sump plug.

OK, it costs more than the wrench for the sump plug, but pays for itself quickly with convenience.

anything marked VW505.01 or 506.01 or 507.00 is OK. Of course for extended interval you need 506.01/507 (more expensive).

Halfords 505.01 is not bad if you buy it at a sale (stlg24/5l sale price last time I tried), other than that there's Miller PD version.

You need to take the undertray off anyway to make a proper inspection of all the bits under there - so using the plug to drain the oil is very little extra work. Taking off the other bit of undertray and checking the transmission oil level is not a bad idea too. It's all such a crappy design you can see why the dealers seldom put them back properly with all of the fixings.

I'm not going to start a debate on drain vs. suck, but I'm not keen on oil extractors having seen "sump off" results on a few (non VAG) test engines at work. (This test involves sucking out as much oil as possible via the dipstick hole and then removing the sump for inspection).

Fuchs 507.00 is reasonably well priced now as it's multi-spec - VAG, M-B and Renault. A fully synth oil will give much better protection to the tubocharger bearings following hard use. Varnish formation on the shaft is a real problem with lower spec. oils following heat soak - "oil is cheaper than bearings".
