Superb brochure arrived this week, strange dealer response

Featured Replies

Well my Skoda dealer called me recently to try and tempt me into changing my old Fabia VRS and one of the brochures he sent was for the Superb.

It looks a really nice car, very executive, completely different of course to a small Fabia but I'm getting to the age now where I'd like to trade a bit of speed for comfort ;)

Of course the obvious choice would be the 3.6 and get power AND comfort, but oddly the dealer did everything he could to discourage this, saying they were not brilliant value for money, expensive to run and would depreciate heavily. I thought it odd a dealer would be pointing me away from the top-of-the-range model, afterwards I think I realise it was more a case of "we'll never have one in as a demo, so we'll never be able to sell you one, so let's push you towards something we do have". But what if I do actually want a politically incorrect and expensive to run car? ;)

Certainly from what I have seen in the brochures, the 3.6 in silver is my dream car - putting cost aside.

Back to earth and the 1.8TSI looks a good compromise, and I am tempted by the DSG, I like the idea of being able to cruise around in auto.

Must arrange test drives soon!

Maybe, just maybe, your dealer thought that this 1.8 is the best choice at the moment. Also, if you drive Fabia at the moment, you are not the most likely candidate for buying the most expensive Superb from the price list.

I have no doubt that the biggest and the most expensive model is great, but it definitely isn`t good value for money. It`s thirsty and at least here you can get M-B E or BMW 500 for the same price. Not nearly as well equipped, but still....at least I think that if skoda costs more than those two, it makes no sense.

I don`t think that my dealer would offer that V6-engine either, unless I absolutely would want one. :rotz:

I see your point, Fabia to 3.6 Superb is not an obvious transition :) But he did know I used to drive a 2.5 petrol - traded it in for the Fabia.

One other factor is how hard a large petrol engined car might be to sell later on, or its trade in value. In today's climate people are not really going for this type of car. I am sure the dealer is right, it was just very odd to have a salesman in a struggling trade putting me off spending a lot of money  Whatever next?

Get a 2.0 TD DSG Elegance, it'll keep you more than happy, and choose the colour right as it's essential, some look good others look bad, ones I've seen I would say yes to are , Met Red,Black,Met Blue, the green metallic looks ok at 1st glance but it'll do the old won't look right thing in time, the Cappachino looks good in pics if Brown takes your fancy, solid blue looks guts, Silver isn't that inspiring either, and I'd imagine white and solid red are absolutely puke.

Grey leather, gives the car a more roomy feel also.

colour choice is obviously subjective. you cant get solid red ?. dont get a diesel unles you need one or really like them. Whilst the common rail is a very nice engine its not as quiet and refined as the petrol. we have a 1.8TSi DSG and its very smooth and quiet. The DSG is a nice box.

The common rail is very refined compared to the Fabia 1.9 engine!!

having driven a fabia courtesy car I have to agree. a tractor is more refined than the old diesel engines !!

Thanks for all the info. The 1.9 Fabia is definitely tractor-like, I think I'll be pleasantly surprised by the refinement of the latest generation engines :)

Colour is very subjective, they do seem to put a lot of black plastic trim on cars these days, and some colours compliment these, some don't. I've never been a big fan of white cars, but it works well on a lot of those which have all this trim, but silver is always my choice.

My current Fabia is black which does look nice when clean but does require a little more effort keeping it that way.

Having driven a 3.6, if i could i would :D

And just to mess things up I have driven the 3.6 4x4 and if I could ...I wouldn't........... the cr 170 bhp diesel is fantastic :D
