Drone at 40 and 60mph

Featured Replies

Hi, I have a loudish drone from my 73k Fab at the above speeds. From front end.

Its still there at other speeds not as dominant.

Had put it down to tyre raod noise but with new alloys and new tyres just installed its still persisting albeit the peak sound speeds has altered slighly.

Could it be front wheel bearings?

Any way to check this easily before probing deeper?

Cheers, Lee

if you have still got your old alloys put the fronts back on and see if its still there

The alloys replaced the old steel wheels all round.

What would that indicate?

then you would know if it was your new tyres or not

Tyre noise is certainly a possibility. Unless care's taken in the tread design, you can get standing waves as the tread blocks hit the road which create a hum. Since it's a standing wave, it can be speed-dependent due to constructive / destructive wave interference. It's most obvious on mud & snow tyres, but is still a possibility on road tyres, I guess...

Quite sure after reseaching the syptoms further that it is Front wheel bearing degredation!

Not sure however whcih side it is, how jacked up and checked the up/doewn movements and there is some play on both sides.

Should I just bite the bullet and replace Offside/Nearside together?

are the tyres federal S595's? they make that noise throughout the whole of their life....

way to check which bearing is to drive at the speed with the drone, and swerve from side to side... turning left its the offside bearing turning right its the bearside bearing....

Anyone the size of the 12 point Socket required to remove the Wheel hub? (30mm?)

Do both

Do both

I'll second that! On the subject of the (deep) bi-hex socket size - just use search as its in here somewhere - but what term to use? - maybe front hubs ?? (its either 32mm or 34mm - but that statement does not give the answer you need Laser Tools do a hi-impact one if that is any help!).

Dont ever be fooled that removing the old hub from the steering knuckle and puttinf a new one on is easy! Its a bitch of a job without a hydralic press! Ended up using a sledge hammer and enginners vice with extra heat!

Still, got to put it all back together now and find out if the offside need doing too!

OMG does anyone know the size of this darn hub locking nut 12point Socket its not 34 mm its bigger, 38mm I think and does anyone know where I would get one on a Sunday in London South?

  • Author

It s 36mm the new hub nut!

But now Ive changed the nearside the noise remains loud and proud!

Could it now be the CV joints need doing instead?

  • Author

People, I have now performed some further tests!

The noise is clear during straight and left turning manoeuvers, but goes completely into right had turns! I have changed the nearside wheel bearings. Any help?
