123-reg domain hosting annoyances / questions

Featured Replies

I'll give them a call tomorrow in case I can't get it sorted / can't understand it by then, but in the meantime, I have more faith in the old briskoda tech shed support!

So, for argument's sake, let's suggest I have these two domains managed under the same 123reg account: xav.com and xav.co.uk

The xav.com website is currently hosted by another server (the nameserver entries are not those of 123reg but of another system). I want to migrate the hosting so that it's managed by 123reg. Yesterday, I bought for 3 months a "Linux Plus Hosting Monthly" package - the £2.49/month option.

It appears to have attached itself / mapped itself to the xav.co.uk domain. OK, I really want it on the xav.com domain, but will look at that later.

If I go to the control panel, and scroll down to the host section and then click on "Manage all of your hosting", it gives a new page with a table showing that the xav.co.uk is "Live" and there's a green dot next to it.

However, if I then go to xav.co.uk, I only get a 123reg page and not the website I have uploaded via FTP to the account.

Do I just have to wait longer? They say it can take up to 48 hours, but as the table says "Live", I thought that would mean it's done and should be up and running

Second point: it looks like the hosting is hard-wired to the domain against which it was purchased / linked. Ultimately, I believed it should have been just some space against which you your domain name to the storage, and have it flexible so I could effectively have several websites hosted by one package and just have different directories on the storage to hold each site, but that looks like it's not possible :(

I say this because in fact, I want the hosting to be under the xav.com domain and not the xav.co.uk domain, but there doesn't seem to be a way to transfer :thumbdwn:

It's strange that they allow you to transfer domain names between different accounts, but it looks impossible to transfer a hosting package from one domain to another domain in the same account

So, any 123reg experts here who understand their system a bit better than I do? They do seem to have it overly complicated to the point that a techie like myself can't understand it :o :(

I was with 1&1 and the only way to move a domain from one hosting package to another (I had a few at some stage) was to register the domain against the hosting package you wanted it to be under. They would charge a normal domain renewal fee to do so. However, they *would* add time to the domain equivalent to the purchase.

The reason they did this was to not charge for the admin directly, but to still make the money up front I guess.

I havent used 123 for a while but I vaguely recall they have a similar concept. (or had at least).

IIRC all you do is pull the nameserver redirect from the domain you want to host, and by default it should point to your hosting.

You should also be able to set the .co.uk as a perm redirect to the .com through the domain panel. However if you're targeting UK traffic, I'd do it the other way. Perm direct to the .co.uk, as it'll be more search engine friendly.
