Wipers have gone haywire

Featured Replies

today i was driving and the front wipers came on by themselves and went off after 2 up and downs.i thought i must have tapped the stalk by accident.further down the road they came back on and wouldnt go off again.i put the stalk in the position for the rear arm to work and it stopped the front wipers but now the rear is on all the time.when i tried to change the speed of the front ones either pushing the stalk up for faster wipes or the intermittant switch on the stalk the speed is not altering. what coulld be wrong with it could it just be a blown fuse or will it be the front wiper motor.

More likely a faulty wiper switch I would have thought. If it was the motor, putting the switch into the rear wiper position wouldn't make any difference.

When my ones did this it was a fault with the rear wiper motor (the seal had failed from the rear washer and it was full of water). After unplugging the rear wiper motor the fronts were fine.

thanks ExAudiSi.Lordrobs did ur car have the exact same prob and if yes what did u do to rectify it? i recently had to change the rear wiper arm and it took a lot of force (eventually drilling) to release it and it sounds like u have hit the nail on the head by stating the rear wiper. thanks for the reply.

Yep exactly the same. Coming on at random sometimes for a few wipes, sometimes continually.

I would pop the boot trim off and disconnect the wiper (4 pin plastic connector) and see how you get on for a day or two. If all is well the rear wiper is at fault you then have 3 options.

1) leave it unplugged

2) replace with a new motor unit

3) take the opportunity to remove the whole thing and have a super sexy smooth rear end to your car (I took this option ;) )

If you do remove the wiper motor have a plastic container or bucket in the boot ready to catch the sludgy water that is likely to pour out :o

cheers mate i might go on an auction site and see if any 2nd hand motor units are available.

Mine is doing this on and off and it is the relay under the dash i think, as per advice on here i pulled it out, left it out a bit put back in and has been ok for 2/3 months :-)
