General Reliability?

Featured Replies

Hey there folks.

Potentially going to be buying the MKI Octy in the for sale section (the 1999 'S' 1.8 SLXi) and just wanting some general opinions of both the MKI in general and this particular engine.

Is there anything that is prone/common to wear or break on these?

Have read reports that the 1.8 20V engine is good (not sure what engine code it is) and that the 4 speed slush box is pretty rock solid too but not sure how true these are.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Phil

Cam belts and water pumps, make sure that these have been done. Luckily a 1999 pre facelift was before variable servicing came in, I have seen later 1.8s with blocked oil pick ups, leading to low pressure. It's not likely to have a coil pack per plug, so you shouldn't encounter the mis-firing that so many VRSs and 4X4s do. Check for speed bump damage to the sump, noise from the front anti roll bar and links, broken window regulators, rusty rear disc brakes.

You are in the best place to see any trends in things that break.

It could be an AGU engine code, with only one lamda probe, no variable valve timing and no secondary air injection, so less to go wrong.

It will be due a cambelt change and water pump as it's currently at 57,000 miles and I believe the cambelt is due at 70,000 (or before in fact).

Thanks for the heads-up about what to look for.

Cam belt should be changed at 4 years or 60,000 miles, whichever is sooner.

VAG changed the replacement interval a few years back.

I think it is an AGN engine. Not sure what that means. lol

My 02 plate vrs has been faultless in the 16 months i have owned it,the most reliable car i have ever owned and would defo have another newer one:thumbup:

The AGN is 92 KW or 123HP at 6000 rpm, 20 valve non turbo engine. It has variable valve timing, a front mounted ignition coil pack that provides the voltage to the spark plugs via conventional ignition leads. Later versions have a inlet manifold changeover flap. Engines built from August 1996 to July 1997 produce 173 NM of torque at 4100 rpm, from August 1997 to May 1999 this is 170 NM at 4200 rpm.

Cool. Thanks for the info.!

Although not sure what an "inlet manifold changover valve" is! hehe
