Wishbones advice

Featured Replies

Are the front wishbones a common problem on the Octavia TDi's? Going to view an Octy tomorrow night which the owner informs me needs new front wishbones so is letting it go cheap.

What are the symptoms of these going? I assume knocking/clunking over bumps, will it be OK to drive the 15 miles home?

I see the whole assembly is cheap on eBay/GSF any idea's what they're like to fit, or is it gonna be a better idea getting a proper garage to do it?

The rear bush in the Front wishbone is a very common item to let go. You will get a knocking noise as the wishbone will contact the subframe due to more movement. Also the steering will feel a little fague. It will be ok to drive home as the wishbone will still be held in by the bolt going through the middle of the bush. GSF part are ok, so are Europarts. You will pay around 40-50% less than dealer. It depends on how old your car is and if still in warranty which way to go. I do know loads of folks using GSF/Europarts with no troubles.

Replacing the wishbone is relatively easy as these will come with bushes fitted.

Cheers Bowders - exactly what I wanted to hear!

I'd agree it's most likely bushes, and you've already been advised on sourcing new bushes. That said I've not needed new bushes in over 3 years.

If the wishbones themselves are damaged though (visual inspection for bends), I'd walk away.

Obviously I dont know until I've looked at the car, but got a couple of prices on the way, a local VAG specialist want £180 fitted for both sides for wishbones & bushes, he said ball joints very durable on the Octy's and more than likely wont need replacing.

Rather looking forward to viewing, might be in for a bargain here - or equally a lemon haha

Verdict is - needs a wishbone bush on the passenger front side, drivers side is fine but might aswell have both sides replaced for how cheap they are!

Needs a few little bits doing to it, but cant beat the price we got it for!
