A/C Compressor replacement - best prices?

Featured Replies

My 05 vrs has an intermittent problem on the A/C - it only seems to work when going at speed. The local dealer says the compressor clutch is at fault. Googling around, I've read that they are clutchless in the Fabia? The whole compressor unit needs to be changed for ~£800. Is the clutch just integrated hence the "clutchless" terminology? i assume it needs some way of turning itself on and off.

Anyway, if it does need replacing any suggestions as to sourcing a part / fitting around Guildford area?

The AC compressor only has a shear clutch, that breaks if the compressor seizes. The compressor always runs, but only at about 2% capacity when the aircon is off. I would go to an aircon specialist to have a flow test done.

From memory, I think you can pickup recon compressors for £400 exchange, or even better £90 from a scrappy.

Think I've seen them for around £300+ on ebay.

I've just been told the compressor is the problem for my air-con issue. Dealers sorting it this week.

cheers. Shame they can't be repaired.

All of the individual parts for the compressor are listed in the official Skoda Workshop Manual, so I would have thought they were repairable. Werther it would be cost effective though is another matter.

Having mine done at the moment at a A/C specialist that knows a/c inside out and has been trading for about 30years.

You can have your compressor repaired but all the engineers that rebuild them will still charge you for a complete replacement as they will give a years guarantee.

£373 is the cheapest recon unit I have found at Euro Car Parts but you have to add to that

- the Vag. com scan to find the faulty part.

- regas charge .

- a full system evacuation to rid the a/c system of foreign bodies.

-and about 3 to 4 hours labour. H My bill is £700 with some discount as I managed to negotiate a bit.

If the receiver/dryer or condensor are at fault as well, then add some more.

Not cheap but thats the way it goes.

I got very hot when driving.

Had this problem myself -

Last year, I paid £294.38 inclusive of VAT for a brand new denso compressor from these chaps, and also had a condenser off them as well. Their weblink -> HOME

They were quick, and very helpful. When I noted a problem with the condenser they sent out, they replaced it quickly without hassle.

Thats a good price for a compressor but you will still have a final bill of over £600 with the other work reqd.

I'm not paying much difference with my local dealer.

Interesting, what did you do with the AUX drive belt route? Did you remove compressor and fit a smaller belt?
