gasoline question?

Featured Replies

Hello

So i was talkin with friends who most of them have turbo octavias and when i told them I use most of the time 100 octane gas they told me its a waste of money for my motor.. I have the 1600cc 8v :) :) :)

were they right or wrong? should i stick to the cheaper 95 octane gas ? I am not looking for perfomance when using 100 octane but i just want to feed my motor with a good quality fuel ..

what do you think?

i used to have a saxo VTR 1.6 8V and always used to used high oc.

they are right it better for turbo cars but its will be better then the normal stuff for any car!

my theory was used that and there wud be no problems with the engine block. (most engine blocks are bomb proof anyway

i have used high octane fuel in a variety of cars and always find i get better fuel consumption

Yup, as already said, it is a better grade, it burns more efficiently, and therefore increases MPG or L/km. It should help to lengthen the life of sparkplugs and fuel filters also!

SO I AM not wasting money to an already expensive gas... ( 70 EUR for 3/4 of a tank )

thanks :)

Not so sure, I used to have a 1.6 8V polo and it definitely did lower mpg on high octane fuel (330 miles per tanks vs 360 on standard fuel). I tested this out several times on a fixed big mile journey I was doing regularly at the time and always got the same result. I also never noticed any difference in performance.

I used to have a 1.6 16v Fiesta and put super unleaded in it a couple of times. There was no difference in performance and no difference in economy, so I just stuck to regular after that.

The vRS however is quite different, on regular unleaded it feels sluggish, and I get about 20 miles more out of a tank of super unleaded, if driven sensibly.

If you're worried about regular unleaded not being good enough for your engine then redex it once a year to clean the injectors.

There are only 2 ways you'll get better performance from high octane:-

1) If the engine has a knock sensor on it (and I'm not sure the 1.6 does).

2) If the engine is specifically mapped to run on high octane.

1) no idea

2) i have not remapped the engine.

It burns exactly the same, there is nothing mystical about high octane fuel apart from it's knock resistance.

There is only a benefit in using higher octane if the engine is mapped to make use of that margin in terms if increased ignition advance. I'd be surprised if the 1.6 would show any difference, the vRS on the other hand most definitely does - the system is often pulling ignition timing in response to the knock sensors on 95RON fuel even on a standard car, never mind remapped, this has a noticeable hit on the performance compared to SUL. It also explains why the mpg drops with 95, since the engine will be running with less than optimum ignition timing

Simple answer is try it and see, if you can convince yourself it's better, all well and good, if not then stick to 95 :)
