Saw tooth wear rear tyres

Featured Replies

Advise please.

Octavia L & K 140bhp.

Rummbling noise from rear tyres getting worse over time.

Car now done 29900 miles still plenty of tread left.

However saw tooth effect on inner tread blocks both rears.

Would you recommend,

1) Swap rears to front and hope the tyres wear to an even pattern.

2) If this works swap tyres as above ever 5-6k miles.

Also what is the torque setting for wheel nuts,17 inch alloys.

Many thanks in advance.

I'd be getting the rear camber checked as this was a known issue.

If the tread wear is even across the tyres just switch them front to back and the noise will probably disappear. It my pay to get the set up checked for four wheel alignment machine.

You should definitely get an alignment done. Merely swapping wheels will cause your okay front ones to sawtooth as well.

Get them done by a main dealer, and get a printout of the results. This will a) give you peace of mind that they needed correcting and B) ensure you have evidence just in case the problem re-occurs.

Once the alignment is complete, consider either swapping rear to front or having the tyres swapped over to the other side of the wheel.

They will probably always be noisy. Once of mine was so bad that I simply replaced it.

The alignment should cost roughly £70-£80 plus VAT.

Thanks for the advice.

Will book in for the checks.

Good tip to obtain print out.

Thanks again.

I had my 4 wheel alignment done a few thousand miles ago. I have noticed some very minor "saw-toothing" on the rear tyres (Contis), but not enough to worry about noise, and the tyres wear is pretty even across the whole tread width.

Personally, I'd just swap the rears around, left to right and vice versa (provided they're not directional tyres).

My main dealer cocked up the alignment - twice! The first time causing catastrophic wear of the tyres and the second time leaving the steering wheel off centre as the rear wheel angle was all wrong!

Best going to an agent who has the Hunter Alignment equipment and an operator who can use it correctly.

Wheel alignment / worn bush.

For worn bush check, jack car up, place a long block of wood under the wheel and lever suspension up to see if there is lateral movement.

Torque 110 ~ 120Nm

Unidirectionals or asymmetrics?

You're stuck with front - rear swaps on unis, but you could swap asymmetrics side to side on the rear.

Thanks All,

Tyres are directional moved rears to front (same side). Test drive 25-30mph same noise only sounded worse as the noise is in front. No wobbles or shakes up to 70mph. Will live with it and try a different make next time. Current tyres Bridgestone Potenza 225/45 17R 91 W.

I have just bought a used 2007 Octavia L&K, 20,000 miles, and the dealer has told me that he had to replace the original rear tyres as they had worn rough on the inside edge, what year model were you experiencing this on?

This problem can affect all Mk2 Octavias, so it might be well worth you getting the four-wheel alignment done, just to be sure.

Saw tooth is a known fault through the vw group.do not waste your money on alingment just swap the wheels around and in about 1000miles it will even out.

As this is the second time I have bought a car from the dealer in 2 years, I think I will get them to look at it under warranty. I have always found my dealer Robert Eardley in Crewe to be very good.

Car was new Jan. 2008. Have been looking on net. Appears it's not just a VW Audi group problem.

All makes, cars and tyres suffer with large dia. wheels and wide treads???

Found that but NOT the answer.

I bet the likes of Ferrari dont suffer!!!

If its appearing on rear tyres that are wearing evenly across the tread, saw-toothing is suspected to be caused by the fact that rear wheels apply a braking force to the road, but are just dragged along with the rest of the car under acceleration.

If that's the case, the only cure would seem to be to brake earlier and more genly or not at all. There you are: don't use the brakes; all they do is slow you down! ;)

One of my back tyres was badly worn on the inside compared to the outside, other rear not as bad. Will a alignment cure it?

The dealer did the 4 wheel alignment without me asking prior to collection, not bad service if you ask me!!

Probably; if you've got excess inside edge wear on one rear, it sounds like you've got too much negative camber on that corner, but it could also indicate a mis-aligned rear thrust axis.

I thought it was my imagination or a wheel bearing however from all the threads I suspect my new annoying noise is the rear tyres, originals having done 27000 miles Conti 2 225/40/18". They're rumbling from 30 Mph and it appears to worsen around 45-50 Mph. They don't appear to be badly sawtoothed but are not far off the wear bars. Due for service soon so will ask dealer to look at this. Any other views appreciated.

IME well-worn tyres are nosier than new ones (for a given make and size on a specific car), particularly on rough surfaces.
