forge short shifter

Featured Replies

fitted my forge short shifter today, compliments of hoffmeister,

I initially got the instructions read them once i had removed my intake, then realised they made something so easy look so hard.

It was litterally a case of putting the car in neutral, remove your air intake( it would probably be harder if you have the standard airbox though), trap the gear lever with suplied nail, disconnect the 2 gear linkages, unbolt the centre screw, take the part out then the reverse, really easy!!

im no mechanic and found this to be a doddle. 30 minutes start to finish.

The review it self.

luckily hoffmeister had already had it on his car and it was set to 2/3rds which he believed to be optimum. I defiantely agree, the shift is massively shorter now, however not too short that you miss gears. I certainly dont feel the need to go any shorter (until i get bored and want a fiddle)

I see forge also do the short side shift, I dont think it will be needed personally, i would only consider that upon test driving a car with one in though.

the exhaust is going on tomorrow, along with the D revision DV. just need to pick up the exhaust gasket for the VW garage first thing. then stage 2 map loading straight on:D hopefully no issues

you dont need the side to side adapter si, had 1 and wouldnt buy another in all honesty

I certainly wouldn't want the shorter side shift. I could see it ending in tears. Very chuffed with the Neuspeed short shift as it is.

Are gear shifts noticeably heavier? I presume you have less leverage if the gear shift is made with a smaller lever throw... How is it when going into 1st while rolling?

It's something I'd be interested in trying - the only short throw gear box I've used was an 1989 Ford Orion though - only part of the whole car that wasn't complete junk :)...

going into first whilst still rolling is no different to normal, 1st seems the longest throw, all the others are nice and short.

to be fair though, i rarely go into 1st whilst rolling. she picks up nicely in 2nd at real low speeds so unless i stop i do that.

i definately think the side shifter would provide a more awkward shift and ruin the shift.

what i cant see however is why the forge shifter is half the price of the neuspeed one. build quality looked perfect even though mine was second hand. what extra is it doing for twice the price

Just a quick tip Simon, I would fit the DP first, test it then do the "D" revision DV. The D revision didnt work well on my car and I lost power. Ended up going with the G revision. It could have been a dodgy valve but if you put the DP and the D valve on at the same time you wont be able to tell if your D revsion works properly as the extrapower from the DP will cancel the loss out.

I fit them both at the same time and it took me ages to work out that the DV didnt work right.

there is no g revision any more, it has been superceded by this DV supposably.

i also think my DV on at the moment has gone tits up but i will do the DP first give it a drive, then see how it feels, then put the DV on. if it gets worse ill see what i can sort out.

thanks though

The Neuspeed one does look a lot shinier and nicer, not that that really matters given its location. I guess they also have to be imported from the states.
