Just a quick question, are the engine fans meant to come on when the car is first started? Thre reason I ask is that I had reason to start the car with the bonnet up yesterday, the car had been stood for a few hours so was quite cool. As soon as I started it up the fans kicked in, the car gets up to temperature quite quick so its not over cooling?

If the aircon is on, yes.

had the same problem with my 2.0ltr Octy.

Temp needle also kept fluctuating between 0 & 1/2 way

turned out to be a faulty temp sensor (sorry not sure which one as garage sorted mine)

Fuel pump priming the system IIRC :)

Yep, turned it off and fan went off, cheers :D
