respray bonnet and wings - on or off car?

Featured Replies

As some might know, im currently fixing my vrs after a front end accident. I have sourced 2 new wings and a bonnet for the car which are going to need spraying (they are red and my cars black!) Should i ft them to the car, and get them sprayed on the car, or just take them down the body shop. Bearing in mind the underside of the bonnet is going to need doing as well.

Cheers

Andy

If it was my car i would get them all sprayed up first then fit them. Will give a better finish and will get all the areas that you couldn't get if they were on the car.

Thats what it was thinking as well - was just checking. Cheers mate

I think a lot of bodyshops do a mixture of the two. Get the base coat on with the parts of the car... then the final spray to match up against other pannels when they have been fitted on the vehicle.

I work for a body shop on the weekends and do lots of car spraying.

It depends on what they want, it's easier to do them on their own but it would be difficult to make sure they are as closer match as possible. Ask them what they prefer and make sure you know they are a good repair shop!

In actual fact thinking about it i'd have them and the car both together, spray them off the car then fit them after and make sure all was good.

I had my red front wings and bonnet sprayed off my black Octy, and the colour match is perfect...

Only reason i suggested that with red as it has a tendency to fade!

yeah but both his and my cars are black, and the replacement wings are red...

D'Oh!

ahhhhhh, I didn't read that properly!

Just give them the panels then if that's the case.

i got my boot (i know its a different panel) painted while it was on the car. almost perfect match, you'd never know unless i told you.

Do you do "private work" ;) ???

hi mate depends how fussy you are? Me personally as a painter would get my doors blown out for the colour as some paints can look brown in the direct sun light especially now we use water base paints!! Would also be tempted and pay abit extra to have the first foot and a half buzzed back to under coat so you dont get red stone chips. Because it puts people off when you come to sell it.

Thanks for the replys - what should i be looking to pay do you think for a good job?

I would say about £500 should do for a good job. Would stay away from main dealers and big body shops as they will have your pants down. (I know i work for one) Find out about some little body shops around your area that have got a good reputation and been around for a while. If you where in Sheffield i could recomend you to some.
