Change to VAG.Com Reported Function Coding

Featured Replies

Went to use the Air Con in my 2003 1.4 16v saloon last week and found it would only output a minimal amount of chilled-air and only when the dashboard control was set to footwell output.

Did a VAG.Com scan which revealed some pre-existing faults (Highlighted orange) but some new ones (highlighted red). Also noted that some of the pre-existing faults had changed in comparison with an earlier scan (Nov 2008), see below, as had the coding highlighted in blue:-

Skoda, Fabia 1.4 16V 2001 Air con not working

Reference info contained in the link above, I understand the codings in the VAG COM scans highlighted blue contain data that defines the functions of the car and that the current coding of this function on my car (00031) indicates that Air Con is not available.

WITHOUT AIR CON

000?x: CAN-Datenbus Teilnehmer

+1 - ABS

+2 - Airbag

---------------------

1+2 = 3 => 0003x

000x?: Getriebevariante

1 - 5-speed gearbox

---------------------

00031

WITH AIR CON

000?x: CAN-Datenbus Teilnehmer

+1 - ABS

+2 - Airbag

+4 - AC

---------------------

1+2+4 = 7 => 0007x

000x?: Getriebevariante

1 - 5-speed gearbox

---------------------

00071

The exam question is, if there is a real problem with the air con does the ECU fault software automatically recode these items ?

Can I re-code to 00071 using VAG. COM. Are there any risks to this i.e. if there is a genuine Air Con fault ?

Car was serviced, ecu software updated, by Skoda Main dealer between Nov 2008 and July 2009. And no, I haven't upset anybody in News International.

Nick

Its possible that after an update the coding gets reset, probably the dealer who missed that during the update. Just put it back to 00071 and you're fine when it comes to the engine. The A/C faults are quite common with the Polo/Fabia/Ibiza models, nothing you can do usually except replacing the flap motor in question.

I can see that's its possible that an ECU update may reset some coding to default values, but I've had at least two previous ECU updates, one of which was provided by this main dealer, and this mis-coding was never occured before.

Anyway the car had aircon installed from new - surely the default ECU settings, as set-up on the manufacturers production line would include aircon as one of the defaults ?

If it is a genuine ****-up then it don't say much about quality control in servicing.

Of course, If I hadn't had VAG COM or a fault code reader, I would not have been aware of the erroneous code and probably would now be happily paying £60 plus VAT for a system evacuation and re-gas, £50 for a ECU diagnostic and unknown amounts of £s for a leak test.

Nice little earner for dealers during the summer holiday season in the middle of a recession !

Perhaps I will start a poll to see if anyone else has been offered an ECU update on a Fabia 1 this year - seems to me to be a bit late in the day to be offering ECU updates on this model ?

Also, the flap motor fault codes have been there since the vehicle was purchased. I even had one dealer (Not my regular one) try to sort it out and he came back, after apparently consulting Skoda UK, and said that this was normal operation - typical UK motor industry - lazy barstewards.

The update is out for quite a while but what I find embarrassing is that they didn't even to put the latest version on there but instead used one which was much older. Probably used an old flash CD.

For 036-906-034-DF we have seen the versions 4563, 4592, 4842, 5020 and 5954 in the wild, the latest update changes the software part number as well and the new version then is 036-997-034-BD @ 7747. This 036-997-034-BD @ 7747 is available since mid 2007.

You would have thought so, but Skoda did put in the wrong ECU codes for some of the early Fabias when they were built, resulting in the 18020 code and the air conditioning not working.

I've just noticed that the ECU component code has changed from MARELLI 4MV 4842 in the Nov 2008 scan to MARELLI 4MV 5020 in the July 2009 scan.

Does that mean that the ECU unit has been physically changed/swapped out for another unit ?

Nick

Please see my reply above.

Why wouldn't a main SKODA UK dealer use the latest version ?

Nick

Please see my reply above.

Quote: "Probably used an old flash CD." - Means, not used the latest one.
