Amber oil warning light won't extinguish...

Featured Replies

...despite topping up.

Driving home yesterday, the amber oil warning light came on, accompanied with a warning beep, just after I accelerated hard (with a warm engine). I drove the remaining 5 miles home, and left the car overnight.

On checking the dipstick today, the oil level was indeed low. I added an estimated 300mL of oil, and rechecked the dipstick which is now showing somewhere in the top half of the hatched "level OK" area.

The amber warning light still comes on immediately (after the normal startup lamp test), and stays on. I've taken the car for a gentle 20 mile drive, and nothing has changed; the warning light is still on, and the dipstick still registers enough oil.

Looking round the forum I see that people have had problems with the bonnet switch not reading properly, and thus the warning light not being reset.

With the bonnet open, the "doors open" warning indicator does not come on. There's no visible damage around the bonnet switch, and neither disconnecting it nor subsequently reconnecting it changes anything.

On my test drive, the engine sounded normal, and temperature was normal too.

Car in question is a 2003 Octavia 1.9TDI PD 130 Elegance, 75k miles.

Any thoughts on:

- anything else I could try?

- how soon it needs to go to the dealer? (i.e. can I drive 100 miles tomorrow, or am I going by train?)

- does the "doors open" warning light normally come on when the bonnet's open?

Any help much appreciated - it's quite possible I've missed something *really* obvious, so don't hesitate to ask me stupid questions!

Thanks,

Tom

Not sure about the Mk1 octy, but the Mk2 has a symbol for bonnet open when the ignition is turned to the first position.
