Front tyres shot after 11,000 miles

30k and mine are just hitting the wear indicators. Rears still have 4-5mm left! 17" Michelin Pilots Primacy's.

What pressures are you running?

I find that very strange: Y rated tyres are rated for speeds up to 300 km/h (187 mph). This must be a mistake, as only one Superb (the 3.6) can get anywhere near 240, so V rated tyres should be fine.

And, as I said before, the rear axle has a load capacity of 1250 kg, so you need at least a load index of 92 (630 kg per tyre)

This is what Michelin had to say about it:

Dear Mr XXXXXXXXX

Thank you for your recent e-mail.

We would advise that for your Skoda Superb (2008), unfortunately we do not have a fitment for your vehicle on an 18 inch tyre. However, when on a 16 or 17 inch tyre, the load rating as specified by the vehicle manufacturer is 91. Therefore, we would recommend that the load rating when on 18 inch should be 92, as we do not manufacture a 91 load rated tyre in this size.

You may need to check with your insurance company, as to what they have as the load rating requirements for your vehicle. If you are on the wrong load rated tyre (too low) you may not be covered by your insurance policy.

Skoda Superb tyre fitments:-

Standard tyre fitment – 205/55 R16 91W

Optional tyre fitment – 225/45 R17 91Y

Our recommendation if going to an 18 inch tyre fitment – 225/40 R18 92Y

We have allocated your message the reference number indicated above. If you need to contact us again regarding your message, we would be grateful if you could include the reference number.

Once again thank you for your interest in Michelin.

Yours sincerely

Michelin Tyre Public Limited Company

Plenty of 92W rated tyres at Camskill for £60-70 each at 40 profile or if you jump up to a 45 profile there are 94W tyres at £70 - 80 each. That's where I will be going when time comes to renew. The high street tyre companies need to check the internet. Replaced the original Conti's on my wifes Focus CC with Falken 912? for £75 each fitted. Same ride quality.

On the German Skoda site there a PDF with all standard tyre sizes for Skoda's. Scroll down to the Superb 3T and see that load index 91 is only allowed for the Greenline. For other versions load index 92 to 94 is required.

My Volvo S60 needed new front tyres every 12k, and the Skoda is more powerful. Why would I expect tyres to last longer than people are experiencing?

I would reckon having to change tyres below 12,000 miles is unacceptable and has to have something to do with driving methods or unusual road conditions. I have the same vehicle as Bagpuss and have so far done about 13,000 on the original tyres with no sign of replacements being needed for a while (unless punctured of course), and would hope for something closer to 20k.

Have to say the Contis fitted are rather noisy though.

You should easily be able to get 20-30k on fronts.

If not then either your driving style is poor, or you're not maintaining them correctly (air pressures).

I had some cheap crap on the work car, and even that managed 20k!!!!

I was absolutely amazed to read the low mileage that some people are getting out of their tyres. Our 18 month old Superb 2.0 ltr TDI PD 140 Elegance has recently had two new front Tyres (Michelin XSE 225/45R 17 91y) the mileage 26,000+ there was still enough tread across the width of the tyre for several thousand more miles. One of the tyres had developed an egg sized bump on the wall of the tyre, hence the change. The other two original tyres are still on the car at 32.000 miles and I would be surprised if we don't get at least another 3-4000 mile out of them. Have to say if we were only getting 11-12000 miles out of our tyres at £200+ a tyre we would get shot of the car PDQ.

My wifes Octavia VRS has had one change of front tyres and one change of rear tyres in the 46,000 miles its covered and it still has a good miles left and i normally change at 2-3mm

I'd be disappointed if i dont get 20,000 miles out of my front tyres

12,000 seems a little low but then you are talking about a heavy front wheel drive car with a lot of torque if you are shall we say an enthusiastic driver or doing all urban mileage then I can see you might get wear like that.

On the last two cars I had (each for 3 years VW Golf 1.9 TDI & BMW 118d) the most I got was 16k from the wheels doing the driving.

I expect to get at least this mind on the fronts now as the Superb is a bit more relaxed to drive than the BMW.
