1.6 Pickup cam belt- easy?

Featured Replies

How straightforward is a cam belt (& tensioner?) swap on a 1.6 petrol? Anything special I should look out for?

Thanks all..

the only really fiddly thing is getting out the self tapping screw that is on the upper timing belt cover. obviously whenever i've done them i ALLWAYS put it back in again:O

you will need to drop the engine off the mounting to get the belt in, so you will need a jack with a block of wood, also be carefull not to cross thread the engine mount bolts when you put them back in.. it's only a really poor grade ally casting

It's a pretty straight forward job.

The only thing I would say is make a note of the markings on the casing behind the crankshaft pulley before you pull the belt off. I seem to have 2 markings on mine that could both be the timing mark and they are quite hard to differentiate while the engine is in the bay??? Not much room to get your head in there properly. The Haynes manual only showed one. After some faffing about pulling the pulley on and off I narrowed it down to the correct mark.

Hopefully this will save you the hassle I went through.

line up the tooth with the chamfered edge to the left hand fin which is cast into the oil pump

ref: the other fin is only used on the 16v engines

your cam pulley will look different to this one, but there is a small dot stamped on the outer edge and that lines up with the plastic lug
