The dealer could always decide not to put the scrappage paperwork through and effectively pay the £1k government contribution themselves but that's unlikely to be worth their while.

Once they have claimed the money they have to scrap the car.

" Could they re-sell the car privately ? " It seems a shame that some old model cars in excellent condition some with low milage have to be scrapped

It would appear it is "greener" to make a whole new car and ship it from Korea than it is to maintain an old car :thumbdwn:

Sadly it's true. My best mate works for a Citroen main stealer, and he actually tried to pursuade an old biddy in her 80's NOT to purchase a new C1, as it meant her 'mint, as fresh looking as the day it was delivered to her back in 1996' ZX' was going to have to be destroyed.

Only 35k from new. He had to go and collect it last week, and it apparently drove as good as it looked. He was gutted, but as he said, trade value dictated that it was only worth £500 regardless. Total and utter waste.:thumbdwn:

I've seen many other nice cars going to the crusher during the course of my work. Horrible sight.

It's a total waste. Where are new drivers going to get cheap car from now?

Gumtree it seems- thats were my brother has got his first car from

Some dealers have seen some rare models come through and helped the owners sell them on

Im not sure about this. I wont say where and when, but I know someone who traded their car against the scrappage scheme for a nearly new car (year old), and the old car was sold on. Maybe this is slightly different for nearly new cars than new. However it was under a scrappage scheme which gave far more than the car was worth.

It couldn't have been under the governments scrappage scheme as it applies to new cars only, not demonstrators, pre-registered and certainly not cars a year old. The checks involved ensure that a new car is registered to the person who has traded in a scrap car and the monies paid are only paid when the persons old car is issued with a certificate of destruction. More than likely a manufacturer or dealer jumping on the scrappage band wagon to shift some stock. Allowing more than what the car is worth is common practice, it makes the garage look good giving a higher price, though in reality they are just discounting the screen price on the car which they are selling.
