Digital Photo Frame... with a difference!

Featured Replies

Hey there folks.

So I was bored the other day and was looking at the very old sony Vaio sat on the shelf not been used for many many months... and I had an idea!

So a picture frame from Wilkinsons, some bits of wood, lots of use from the hot glue later I have finished my digital photo frame. How many do you see with 15" screens and running Ubuntu hey!

Haven't bothered with the CD drive though if I need it I can just plug it in and use it temporarily but have kept the battery there and also put the speakers and microphone in the sides of the wooden case.

Looks pretty neat I think from the front.

Nice simple Version of Linux.

Just got the folder sharing sorted and sending some pics over via WiFi... brilliant!

What sort of viewer do you have?

Nice one Phil - good use of old kit; like it

Will see what I've got lying around myself :D

Cool!

You should have seen Sven's face when I started mutilating the laptop and nipped out to buy a picture frame and some bits of wood!

Still yet to put a back panel on it to neaten it up but apart from that it seems to be working alright!

At the moment I'm just using the pictures screensaver in Ubuntu to display the pictures but I do like yours Quinten which displays the time on the bottom. What is that?

And yeh steve I say go for it if you can... have really enjoyed tinkering with it the last couple of days and result is stunning really... I mean people have pictures frames but cheap ones with very poor picture quality and tiny screens and this is very stricking with the pretty big screen!

It's running Firefox in kiosk mode displaying a website build from javascript/php and mysql. If webdevelopment (it needs modifying to your own situation as mine displays a lot more than just pictures ;)) is your forte, then you're most welcome to a copy of it

That's very cool.

How bored do you get?

That sounds slightly foreign talk to me! I'm more of a hardware guy but if you were to give me a basic run-down on how to edit it and what is what I can usually get my head round most things!

I am currently using a very neat little console based picture viewer call "feh". It auto runs the script at boot and just ramdomly cycles through picstures with no transition effects so as not to task the 650mhz pentium chip too much! :P

And thanks Simeon... but frankly my dear I don't give a damn! hehe

Could I get a copy of that?

Thanks... Just got to work out how to actually use it now! :P

The short is that you need to either run a webserver yourself, or find a place where they can host it for you. You can install apache (or something more lightweight) on the frame too. Then you need to be able to run PHP scripts on the webserver. After that, you probably want to rip out all the MYSQL stuff that I do, and just use the javascript for the images...

10 out of 10 for the work.

Think I will just stick with trusty Feh to display my pictures although it would have been nice to have a clock and weather on the screen too.

Little update...

Sound has stopped working after a little tiny transistor fell off the board near the headphone socket so now using a cheapo USB sound card for that.

I have now installed a USB 2.0 card into the PCMCIA slot to plug the sound card into and I'm currently playing around with getting a webcam working to be able to remotely view images from it.

I have unplugged the very noisy little fan that was kicking in every few seconds and mounted a 120mm fan over the heatskink which is now making it run very cool and also cooling most other bits on the motherboard including the HDD.

Used a program called "Unclutter" to hide the mouse pointer when idle.

Got well over 1000 images on there now and still got 30GB free!!!
