S-Type Jag..any good?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Just wondered if anyone has owned/knows anyone that has owned a Jag S Type 3.0? I'm looking at a couple on 99/00 plates and just wondered if there were any things to watch out for apart from the obvious used car stuff.

I'm really tempted by the low price, and equipment levels and I've found a couple that appear to be in decent condition.

One of my bosses has an 03 model, done just over 100k and had no problems.

The only issue he has is the thirst

Is your boss a vampire?

Nice cars and good engines those. My old boss had one and I borrowed it a couple of times... very smooth drive indeed and gear changes were barely noticeable.

I think just the usual used car stuff on these to look out for and make sure it has a good service history which it probably will.

Agreed on the fuel consumption things... probably low 20's!

No, an alcoholic...

forgot to say its an auto (are they all?) so that's why it drinks well. When I've been in it it, there's enough room but its not as big inside as you'd think. He's had it from new and its been far better behaved than someone else's old type but newish XK

Yeh know what you mean... big inside but quite cramped I found with all the bulky seats and dash etc but still a nice place to be!

And yeh think they are pretty mush all autos with the 3.0 litre in. Did they do different power outputs in the 3.0?

I hated an earlier one I tried, 3.0V6 SE auto - on a T plate I think. Thought it drove and handled like a barge, and yes - low 20s combined consumption.

Don't think it looks very nice either, and the interior didn't have the look, feel and quality of say an older proper Jag - like an XJ....

So it's a no from me :)

The new style ones are definately a lot nicer agreed... especially the R ones....

Perhaps it was my perception of it back then going from a 1.9D ZX to the S-type but it felt very nice to me.

Felt strangely like a soft American 'sedan' to me - with an interior to match...

IMO, compared with rivals it was nowhere - right up until the point it was replaced! Compared with a 5-Series, E-Class etc.

I've known two people over the last few years with Jags (not sure if they were S-type or not), neither seemed to rave about them, especially not the one who had to have the gearbox replaced out of warranty, out of his own pocket. The Jag dealers didn't seem to give a **** about their customers either :thumbdwn:

Thanks for the input guys. I'm just waiting to hear about the part ex price on my vectra and then try ad sort a deal!!

Thanks again!!

I wouldn't have one. The interior on the pre-facelift cars wasn't very nice.

Remember reading when they were launched that it was based on Lincoln chassis, explains the american style handling and ride.
