Home network problem - Cant move files to 2nd pc

Featured Replies

I am having some problems transfering files from the downstairs pc to the one in my sons attic room, the shared internet connection is fine its only when i try to put mp3 files into his shared public folder it says cannot connect.

I can view network computers and see both machines but when i click the icon for the second computer it wont allow me access.

The upstairs pc is running vista home premium and the one downstairs is running the release candidate version of Windows 7.

I have the network set to "home network" and have selected allow pasword free sharing but still no joy.

Any help would be great - Thanks

You need a user account on the Vista PC with the same username and password as the windows 7 machine.

When you try and connect to vista, it attempts to authenticate using the current username and password, if they are not present then you dont get access.

cheers will give that a go when you say user account with the same name do you mean a network name - cheers

On the vista PC go into control panel > user accounts and create one the same as you did when you installed Windows 7.

do both user accounts have to be admin accounts as it wont work but the upstairs pc is a standard user acount and not an admin one but the downstairs computer is admin.

Would this cause some problems transfering files from one pc to the other.

as long as the username/password are the same it doesnt matter what type of account they are.

Just jumping in on this, does the same apply too Vista-vista networks, as my new laptop keeps asking for desktop username and password before letting me access my files. Not a major problem but a little ball achey lol.

Yes, that should solve that one as well.

i was wondering if permissions have been set correctly?

This is strange, sometimes i can get onto the upstairs machine (vista) and vice versa then it will say that it cannot connect to the upstairs pc then if it feels up to it will.

The permisions are set ok to allow sharing/network access. Just sometimes it will let me into the upstairs machine then it wont.

The only other thing maybe i have a signal problem on the wirless side of things but then the upstairs machine is connecting to the internet without any issues.

Will keep trying - cheers.
