Front Suspension Noise

Featured Replies

Morning!

My mate and I fitted new wishbone bushes and suspension struts including top mounts and bearings yesterday and I now seem to have a clunk coming from the front end. It seems to manifest when itself when you've reversed out of a driveway and then start to drive off forwards. You can feel it through the steering wheel when it makes the noise. Could it be knackered drop links? They took a fair bit of abuse when the wheel bearings where done about a month back getting the struts in and out of the hub. Doesn't make any other noises though, just seems to be when full lock has been used in reverse and then moving off.

Drop links highly likely.

I'll change them and see how I get on. It seems like quite a big noise for just drop links but I guess it could be them pinging back and unloading the ARB. I was wondering if it was the springs settling in since I've rebuilt the struts over the weekend but it keeps doing it!

My old Golf Vr6 had exactly this issue after I did the wishbones and struts. I looked at everything until I realised that the front bolts on the wishbones were not quite as tight as they needed to be (need to be bloody tight). dead simple just to go at them with a breaker bar before you try anything else.

Cheers,

iep
