New 323mm discs required. Recommendations?

Featured Replies

Well, I'm a bit peeved. A couple of years ago, I changed my front discs - 323mm on the brembo 4 pots to some EBC Ultimax discs. Also fitted some Mintex Extreme pads.

About 20,000 miles later, they're now pretty badly warped and I was starting to lose confidence in their ability in case of emergency so took the front wheels off to have a look. There's only 2-3mm of meat left on the pads and the discs have a good 0.5-1mm pit on both sides. So I'm going to change the lot.

For the pads, l';; probably end up getting some Ferodo DS2500 again as I know they can be awesome

But what to get for the discs bearing in mind it's the 323mm size - same as the Leon 1.8T Cupra R of a few years ago for reference ;)

I'm not doing that many track days - in fact, can't remember the last one I did, so it's more for "fast road use" than out and out track.

Recommendations?

Stick to ATE OEM discs (they were fine before I changed for these EBC ultimax ones)?

I'd suggest it's the pads that killed the discs as they were withdrawn for higher than usual disc wear IIRC.

IIRC the discs have a 25mm new to 23mm worn thickness so I'd probably say go with the same discs or others at a similar price that people recommend and try the DS2500. ANother option I know many don't like but I do rate are the EBC red ceramic if you're not going to be tracking.

Interesting. Any link to this info? I When I first fitted the discs, I did change the Ferodo pads I previously had so these Mintex ones. The car's done probably 15000 miles on these pads / discs and that does seem rather low. Normal usage too - not done a track day since changing them.

edit: found it http://briskoda.net/maintenance-performance/who-has-mintex-extreme-pads-stock/103745/

I am going from stock discs to EBC Ultimax (with DS2500 as well) so I hope they last OK. My stock discs have gone loads of miles but are now getting a bit ropey. I'm after serious performance on track though, so hope the ultimax discs don't warp easily.

I seem to remember Mr Shifty loving the Tarox G88 discs.

Ahh they do them in 323mm fitment.

Hmm. Maybe if we're still alive end of Sept, then I'll get some ;)

I know the EBC sports grooved and dimpled discs take a lot of abuse without issue and IIRC are a similar price to the ulitimax.

I decided yesterday afternoon to change the mintex pads and put the ds2500 back on. After an awful lot of cursing because the inside pad of the right brake just didn't want to budge, and a bit of hammering to get the ferodo pads back in, I went out for a drive to bed them in.

Hmmmmmmmm :rubchin:

;)

Interesting ;)

Of course, at first, there's an awful lot of grinding sounds :D as it rubs in to the discs.

However, a half a dozen stops or so later, and even a bit of really hard braking from speed, the transformation is amazing.

Not only does it brake a lot harder than the mintex ones did, the warp I had before seems to have gone   - before, when braking, there was a vibrating braking feeling that was offputing and rather worrying. Now, that's gone, and it's smooth progressive braking.

The only downside is that a bit more pedal travel is required before they really start to bite, but I much prefer it. There's just so much more control and feedback than I had with those mintex. I'll order a new set of DS2500 for sure in a month or so  Also, I'll see how it goes, but I reckon there's a fair bit of life left in those ultimax discs. Just looking at them this evening, they're slightly bluer and have a far smoother, silkier look than they did with the mintex pads which produced a distinctly coarse, more grooved looking disc.

Rather happy now :)
