How long should brake pads last?

Featured Replies

Being used on the road and not give the easiest of lives how long should a set of brake pads last? (they're mintex extremes).

just had my pad warning light pop on but not had chance to drop wheel off and check inner pad yet.

Very open question as you rightly say the sensor is only on 1 of the 4 pads, so if they have all worn equally then you should get 1000+ miles out of them still.

However if the pad with the sensor on it has worn the least out of the set then there may well be nothing left at all - the only way to be sure is to pop both wheels off and check them.

My mintex lasted about 12 months, there was alittle meat left on them but I couldn't stand the squeal anymore. And I wasn't that impressed with as they got lower.

FWIW the sensor is on the outside face of the disc and the piston on the inside face, so you tend to get a bit more wear on the inside face IME.

I'd get some new pads and get them in before you score the discs.

if the discs are lipped , the sensor will throw the warning lamp on earlier than necessary, but as the other have said , whip the wheels off and have a butchers

I thought pad wear indicators, either mechanical or electrical should be on the inner pads because you will be able to see the outer pads through the wheel. Also if you have a sticking caliper then the inner ones wear out faster.

At least you've got a sensor, us Fabia drivers don't have them. :(

popped off wheel and got atleast 8mm left on the inner pad, guess the cable is knackered although its not popped up again since!

It could possibly be a bad connection on the plug then (water inside possibly) as all the sensor is just a wire that is embedded into the pad, when the pad gets low the wire gets broken and on comes the light .

The only way it can go back off again is if there is a dodgy connection somewhere.
