How to get moving quickly?

Featured Replies

I have had my vRS for over a year now and whilst I appreciate the torque and overtaking ability, one aspect still has me foxed.

When pulling away from junctions, lights or anything that involves starting from completely stopped the car seems unwilling to 'get going' and wants to bog down and then even though it gets revving in first it still is not very willing - roaring engine. My 1988 44 BHP Estelle 105 is quicker I think:O. I almost feel like giving it 3000 revs and sidestepping the cluch (not that I ever would).

So, please can I have your tips on getting away quickly(ish) from the line?

TH

Short of starting in 2nd and giving your clutch a hard time, I don't think there IS a good way to make a fast start in the vRS... :rotz:

Fit some good tyres to the front, and floor it from the start.

HTH ;)

Road surface definitely helps - I remember the runway at Brunters was great for fast starts. :D

(Not so good for tyre life in the corners, though! )

Revs over 1500, start engaging the clutch, get the clutch engaged fully before you boot it should produce a decent compromise between buggering the clutch and getting away quickly. I've never really thought about it- just don't bog the revs down too low.

3,000rpm and dump the clutch?

In all seriousness, slip the clutch while reving to 2,000-ish used to work for me.

It's a tubro derv - i.e. useless without boost! You need to get the turbo spinning :)

My Elegance showed me how to make other cars go fast from the mark,...lol

There was such a delay between pressing the go pedal and the engine revving (AUB), that I subconsciously started pressing the accelerator and waiting just a sec for the revs to build.. the minute you do this in a car that responds it gives you a healthy lump of power to ease the clutch on to (or, dump.. if ya like)..

Think it's partly why when driving it home the day i picked up the vRS I kept wheel spinning with out meaning to.. lol.

Same here!

About 6 months after getting my Elegance (ATD engine I think), my boss gave me a shot of his Porsche 911 by way of a leaving present. The first couple of minutes were very interesting  God what a car though :D

For me, 2nd gear, 4500 revs, and dump that clutch (but dumped not "too" harshly)

:iagree:

are all derv engines hard to launch with? am the same i find it alittle bit hard to get the launch just right? :(

In the interests of mechanical sympathy, I tend to wait until I'm rolling before giving it the beans anyway :o

very true rolling runs for the win :D

Don't think he's after 1/4 mile pace! :D

2nd gear start on the std clutch I found 'interesting'

Slight bit of revs as you pull away, change to 2nd, then get moving :)

I personally didnt/dont have a problem with getting mine to move quickly ;)

The VRS can certainly feel a bit slow off the lights, mine really runs out of steam in 1st, though 2nd is much better after the remap. It's just one of those things, it makes up for it in other ways. I've never tried a 2nd gear start... mmm might have a go this weekend...

Dont go destroying your clutch however :) Id like to take abit of time off my 0-60 not too much just get in to the 4's then work on extra power in the high gears to knock serious time off the 1/4

If Pete comes back on asking about new clutch prices, we'll know it went well! :D
