40K Service - Dealer or not

Featured Replies

Hi, My car is now due for a 40k service and MOT. As i've only owned it for a couple of months I really wanted to get it into my main dealer (Claybanks) for the experts to give it a good check over. I've given them a call and the service is likely to be either £298.60 or £277.68 (depending what plan its on whatever this means). They said as I come from a 2 skoda family (mentioned my dad takes his Octavia in) that they'll do the MOT for free which was nice enough. The only thing is I have just rang a local Service Centre (Black Diamond in Warrington) who have said they are currently doing Servicing and MOT for £99inc. Will I get much more for my money from taking it into Skoda? I'm confused as of what to do with me currently being skint, £200 is a lot of cash to me!!

Any advice much appreciated.

Marc

I dont see how anyone in this day and age can do a full 40K service and an MOT on a modern car for £99. The correct oil alone, will cost about £60, then there you have all the filters, the VAT, the labour etc. to add on.

You must use the correct oil in the PD engine, failure to do so can lead to problems with the camshaft and the hydraulic valve lifters, ultimately leading to engine failure.

I agree, I'm sure that must be for just a straight forward oil and filter jobby. I shall call them back and mention the fact that I need VAG approved oil, fuel filter, air filter, pollen filter etc. and see how much they bump it up! Got a quote from Nationwide too who said £195 but thats negotiable as the company I work for puts a lot of business their was so its more likely to be £150ish.

Kai - I looked at Unit18 earlier but they are too far from me.

Does anyone know the benefits of the dealer service for double the money other than the stamp and expertise?

Thanks

Both seem a bit out - one too expensive (although normal) and the other far too cheap. To make sense of your question we need to know the age & model of car. It's obviously now out of Skoda guarantee so a custom service sounds to be what you need. This means as well as oil/filter + checks, things like air filter (always do it never mind the book), brake fluid change, cam belt (on age not miles), brake discs, etc. Ask friends which independent garage they use and get a quote from them.

Its a 55 plate VRS on 39.5k. I know I'll get flamed down but I am leaving the cambelt until the next service (I did ask Claybanks about this who recommended not to bother with it this time at the mileage its at, even at 4 years, they said the intervals are very sketchy and they have never seen a bad belt until much older).

I have been advised of a couple of VAG specialists near me that i'll get quotes from today. - JVW in Haydock (anyone used them??) and Awesome Gti in Irlam. I think if I at least use a VAG specialist then it seems to be the best of both worlds... depending on how much cheaper than the dealer they are.

On a lighter note I came home yesterday to find a LCR front splitter sat there... my girlfriend had bought me one for my birthday unbeknown to me! Happy days :) Just need to fit it now :|

I took my car to Skoda for the 40k Service and after paying quite a bit of money, I decided to go elsewhere for the 50k Service I took mine to Star.

When I come to my next car, I will be purchasing it from Skoda but not going to get it serviced there.

Pretty much all sorted through Sarah :) Only saves me about £50 compared to Skoda as they were chucking an MOT in for free... but £50 is a lot of cash to me at the moment!!!

Thanks everyone.
