Temperature guage fault

Featured Replies

This is a bit of a random one, not sure if anyone has come across it. On the very odd occasion when im driving along the engine seems to lose power for a second as if it has ran out of fuel and then the temperature guage plunges to no reading. Turning off the ignition and restarting seems to kick start the temp guage into working again. Anyone had this problem or even heard of it? It does not seem to affect the car in any other way apart from not being able to see what temp the engine is at.

Its a 2.5TDi comfort

Cheers

Ian

My first port of call would be to get the car onto diagnostics and see what it throws up. Otherwise replace the engine temp sensor. It's about £20-£25 if memory serves and is an easy job to replace.

There's a guide on here somewhere for the 1.9TDi engine, it says you have to remove certain hoses for access but I found with some contortionary skills there's no need. If ordering the temp sensor, buy the plastic clip that holds it in place too. It's about 90p and if the original breaks on removing the old sensor, it's worth every penny.

Of course, all this assumes it's the temp sensor that's at fault .... hence diagnostics first if you can.

Another thing to check is the battery leads, look behind the sheaths, if it's gone black you could have an earthing problem, remedy is to cut them back and fit new clamps to them, another sign of it is the battery terminals will get very hot.

Going to worst case the ecu could be faulty, the fact you say it cuts out and the gauge drops back would indicate a power cut off, in the end I think you will have to bite the bullet and take it for a reading, temp sensor normally puts a light on the dash if it's broken btw.

temp sensor normally puts a light on the dash if it's broken btw.

Not always, i currently according to VCDS have a intermittent faulty sensor:

01039 - Coolant Temperature Sensor (G2)

30-10 - Open or Short to Plus - Intermittent

Yet it is showing no signs (other than the fault code) of a fault - no fluctuation in the temp gauge, no light etc.

I would agree however that this seems to be a different fault for you to loose all power, your best bet is to get it scanned and see what fault codes it produces.

Thanks guys,

Guess its tims to by that OBDII (if thats what they are) cable. Been meaning to get one for a while. Temp Guage did drop to zero again this morning without loss of power but then returned to normal after I made a harsh turn. Cuuld just be there is something loose. Will try and have a look at it this weekend

I would say coolant temp sensor

It does the guage , and also the fuelling , as it works like the auto choke...

So it can think that the engine is cold , then alters the fuelling to suit

So I would do that first , common issue

New CTS sensor was brought out not long afterwards
