overfilled on oil

Hi all,

I made the mistake of using national tyres for an oil change yesterday, Booked all online saying I needed 5w30 for my superb 1.8t.

popped to them yesterday and all seemed to go well until on leaving notice the receipt said they used 10w40. questioned the guy and he said dont worry we prob used 5w30?????

made a complaint and the regional manager called me today and said that i did not book it online and that someone at the call centre remembers talking to me and me agreeing to use the 10w40!!! even though i paid for the 5w40 as they are different prices:thumbdwn: just ridiculous.....

he said he will investigate and come back to me but not holding my breath....

as I am no mechanic I just wondered 2 things.

will the oil they used cause me any problems?

and also on checking the dipstick today its showing that its overfilled. on the dipstick its about 4mm above the 2nd crease in the dipstick so about an inch above the hatched area?

sorry about the whinge but really pXssed me off this morning.

More importantly what was the VAG spec of the oil that they used, was it correct?

I don't want to worry you but excessively high oil level can often lead to oil being carried over into the crankcase vent system which can poison the catalyst. You urgently need to get good advice on this from an expert. HTH.

not sure what oil they actually used all it says on the receipt is

Magnatec 10w40

Magnatec is Castrol, so if you look at their website you'll be able to see if it carries the correct VAG classification or not. Your car will be different, but I always insist on VAG 506.01 going into my two Skoda TDi's. HTH.

206.01 :confused: should that read VW 506.01?

Magnatec 5w30 is not VW approved, but the 10w40 is VW 505.00 approved

thanks for the info. the oil i actually ordered is castrol edge 5w30 which is what castrol suggest on the website as i checked before ordering through national. thats the question really is magnatec 10w40 going to cause me problems?

What oil does it say to use in your handbook?

If it says that VW 505.00 is OK then you will be fine - but i would take it back for them to remove the excess oil they put in.

Lesson learnt regarding these conveyor belt service centres.....effing to55ers!!!

If the oil they used is fully synthetic, personally I wouldn't worry. If it isn't, I'd change it.

Dont want to alarm you but if the Engine is over filled you want to remove the excess oils as soon as possible, more oil in an engine can cause more damage than not enough.

It causes a problem called hydralacing (how ever its spelt) oil is hard to compress, that why its use in hydraulic rams and such, if there is too much oil it wont have enough room to move about in the engine thus instead of the oil giving way the engine does, it can range from blown core plugs to complete engine failure.

Its sounds to me that National Tyres are going to be difficult about this so I would sudgest either drain some oil out yourself or if you want to make a point take it straight to them and show them otherwise if you hold out for them and still use the car you could end up with a massive bill that their gonna argue about!

And you deffinately want to get the correct VAG spec oil in the car, If you search this forum you will find lots of threads about putting the correct spec VAG oil in your car, you will also find VAG spec oil is also fully synthetic, this apparently is very important too!

Either of those oils will be fine, One oil is for fixed servicing the other is for intermmitant, if you know you are definately on fixed servicing get that oil as it is cheaper, I used Halfords VAG spec oil, it says on it what VAG number it is made too, Its been in my 1.9TDi for about 10 months now, as long as you get the VAG number right the oil should be alright, As a rule of thumb I wouldn't buy oil unless it had the VAG number on it even if the supplier insists it is the right spec, gives me peice of mind and they can't argue the wrong oil was put in.

According to the Opie oils website Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 Semi-Synthetic Engine Oil is suitable for the 1.8T Superb on fixed service intervals.

here is a pic of the dipstick its filled to above the 2nd crease if you can make it out

also thanks guys for the info on the oil. puts my mind at rest that at least its not going to do the engine any harm!

just thought i would update the thread that after continued discussions national have now agreed to put the 5w30 in the car so will take it down tomorrow for them to do the job. Just one last question though, should they change the filter again tomorrow or will it still be fine?

Overfilling any VAG engine is bad news. The 1.8T engine ought to have fully synth oil to the appropriate VAG spec. - there have been sludging problems with lower spec oils (Google will reveal).

If the wrong oil is in the engine it's essential to at least release the oil filter to allow the contents to drain. They're cheap enough compared with the oil so why not just replace it?

Are you really going to let these people work on your car for a second time? Check that the undertray is properly fitted with every single fixing put back in the right place and with no damage. It's such a pig to deal with that the monkeys usually wreck it and leave half the fixings out.

That's why most elderly B5.5s have broken or missing trays.

Make sure your not getting your 505.00 and your 505.01 mixed up...

505.00 is the old VW Quantum Synta 10w40 Semi-Synthetic, used since the dawn of time!

505.01 is the newer VW Quantum Platinum 5w40 Fully-Synthetic, but which also meets the older 505.00 spec.

I personally would say anything after late 90's should be running the Fully Synthetic, especially if its a 1.8T

If you look in a service book for a Audi TT, it seems to say to only use 5w30 Longlife, but dont know if this is just because they are all on Variable Service Interval.
