abs sensor

Featured Replies

i was told in a previous thread that my abs sensor might be faulty what i need to know where is it situated? what does it look like? and how easy they are to change? being a tinkerer is it possible to do it myself with minimum knowledge or is it somthing that a back street garage/dealer should do??

You've got four ABS sensors, one on each wheel. If you do a fault code scan the code that comes up will tell you which one is faulty. They are fitted into the hub behind the brake disc and shield. With the wheel off you should be able to look behind the brake assembly and spot the multiplug going in to the back of the sensor.

They're held in by a single bolt but being where they are they get gunked up and are a pain in the a** to remove.

I've found the easiest way to get them out is to unplug the multiplug, loosen the bolt from the back, then take the brake disc off so you can lever them out from the front with a flathead screwdriver. They are delicate plastic though so be prepared to replace the sensor if you break it!

9.9 times out of ten you'll break it so be prepared with a new one

Yep - and if it's faulty there's nowt you can do with it anyway so it will need replacing.

right found out my front right abs sensor is fubared now if the easiest way to get the f@@@er out is to remove the disk is it just the big nut on the front of the disk i need to remove to get the disk off???????? if so what size is the nut cause it looks like a fairly big bugger?????

There should be a little wood screw holding the disc to the hub, if possible use an impact driver to get it out otherwise a normal screwdriver will just wreck the head and you'll have to drill the screw out and replace it.

In this pic of my disc, the wood screw is about in the 7 o'clock position

You might also need to undo the bolts holding the caliper to the mounting bracket and take the outer half of the caliper off to get the disc off, unless you can slide the disc out from between the pads (not easy if the pads are new)

The nut you are on about is the hub nut I think. That is on the hub and the disc just sits over the top of it, you won't need to touch it to take the disc off
