Depends what you mean by "some rust". A little surface rust won't be a problem - I've run engines that have been standing for 3 years which had a thin dusty covering of surface rust and they were fine. If it's bad, then it won't be any use, though. Have you got a picture?

+1, don't worry about a bit of surface rust, but if there is any pitting or deep corrosion then chuck the engine in your next door neighbours wheelie bin when they are at tesco...
