Tips on getting power to an amp

Featured Replies

Hi All!

I'm new to the Skoda forum thing so bare with me - i'll sort out a picture and stuff soon enough. Got my Octavia vRS on Saturday. I'm normally quite critical of cars but i'm seriously impressed with it - no complaints at all!

Anyway, I wondered if anybody had any tips on getting a +ve feed from the battery to the back of the car to an amp. Before now i've been able to pull a wire through a wire grommet with the help of a bit of clutch cable, but I can't actually see anywhere to even start?!

...And yes, the speakers really are cack - I was quite shocked. But hey, just gives me an excuse to add my own :)

Hello porkpie ................can't help you at all with ICE , but welcome to the site :D ...........................wait till you come to a meet ...."Hi I'm porkpie"...........it's almost as bad as being mellowyellow ;) ..............when I originally registered , I never thought I would get so involved , if I had I think I may have chosen a different user name ........................but what the hell ;)

hi, just installed amp into car, i took the option of running red amp cable through the gromit nxt to pollen filter, which i had to take the glove box out and all the door trim aswell!!!

also had to take window wipers off and the plastic trim around them to get into the gromit good

put black earth cable into one of the rear light earths

and thats that put all trim back etc and its all hidin away

it could have been worse

could have been mellowporkpie

or even yellowporkpie

There is a thread in the ICE question with pics and a kind of how-to-esque post.

All I remember is something like "it'll cost you some skin" describing a painful step ;)

I'll do a search in a sec. Not sure if pics are still there though...

Ooh, nearly forgot: Welcome

edit: here it is: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/t3066-nice-not-so-dial-up-friendly.html

BTW, Colin, nice tweak of yours that ;)

hi... welcome, pretty new here myself! :haha:

i've recently installed amp in boot, attached it to the back of the seat. ran +ve through behind the pollen filter, earthed it to the rear passenger seatbelt bolt under the seat. Running the +ve through the firewall isnt the easiest of tasks :bonk: , but the thread posted above explains what to do. The hardest part is removing the plastic bit that the windscreen wipers sit in, once you've fed your wire into the cabin then removing the glovebox/side trim is easy.

i've also replaced speakers all round with components, fitted some speakers in the back shelf and recovered it perfectly with acoustic cloth, so it looks as it did before. (i've made a point of saying perfectly because i never do anything right, usually dried glue everywhere and creases! :mecry: ) My head unit was replaced with a dension 80gb mp3 unit, which is fookin awesome (apart from the fact i now have too much music and spend most of my time listening to the first 30 secs of tracks and then pressing next! :trampolin )

And you may need to drill a big hole in the bulkhead like me, depending on the guage of wire used for power. ;)

I'm gonna be uprating to 4AWG soon, and will be using a little nifty cutting tool that has a cutting wheel that spins at 26000RPM to "expand" the bulkhead hole. ;) Aside from that, going under the kickstrips/trim is the best path I've found.

porkipie

dunno where your from but im always willing to give hands on help installing ice just PM me

oh and if the wire you are running is any bigger then 8 guage its best to drill a hole in the bulk head..i had to do this to run my 0 gauge up the car..also took the seats out and lifted the carpet so the wire lies nicely under the carpet and does not lift the platic trim on the sill

Thankyou all for your replies!

Couldn't tell you exactly what guage the wire is, but I suspect i'll be able to get it through the hole next to the pollen filter once i've got it all apart. I will attempt it tomorrow morning.

Once inside the car i'll be away - running it down the kickstrips to the boot is nice and easy.

I'm in Kent Joel - any use?! I'll let you know how I get on...

tfboy - thanks for the link. Most useful!

Random tip...

Remember your -ve lead should be the same gauge as the +ve supply.

And I usually find a rear seat mounting is an excellent earth point.

Ross is right your earth should be the same guage as the live... very important that.
