On the Nurburgring - Turbo Blown!!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Am on a trip at the moment at the Ring' in my vRS - first lap of the day, half way around, and pop!

Have had the car checked over and the turbo has gone apparently (engine turns over but won't fire, however if I disconnect the top pipe to the intercooler, it will run, however with alot of smoke!). It cost me £250 to get removed from the track itself.

The car is now going to be recovered home, and im in a crappy hire car.

Just want some opinons I suppose, if to just get the turbo replaced for another standard unit (how much?), or get a bigger turbo, or hybrid? Money is a limiting factor however! Is there anything else I should be budgeting for in relation to this problem?

Cheers, Si.

Are you sure its not just a pipe come off? they are prone for it with poor vag clips on them.

The engine would still run if the pipe had come off. Since reconnecting the pipes makes the engine fail to start, means that something is seriously wrong with the turbo.

Yeah - this sounds like turbo failure to me sadly.

Cant believe you paid 350 quid to get it off the ring.. id have thought sod that, pulled over on a grassy bit, unplugged the sensor to throw it into gheyness mode and limped it all the way back with no smoke nd at 50mph!

However your in luck, Ibiza 130 TDi has a standard turbo for sale for a mere 100 quid + p&p as per the thread in this area... id get that.

That can land you in more trouble than paying the £350, if the car is so much as leaking a small qty of oil or other fluids you will get an even larger bill for the cleanup of the track. If you have breakdown cover through ADAC you can get the £350 back, otherwise it doesnt matter what breakdown cover you have you have to pay the £350 to get recovered by the authorised recovery company.

he said it was £250..

My turbo blew a couple of weeks ago i fitted a pd150 unit, Its awesome lots more torque really happy with it cost just over £600 brand new from euro car parts!!! A litttle bit of messing about to fit it but with a little help from Jabba Sport did it myself, its the nuts!!!!!:D

ah that sucks ***! im guessing it was prob on the hill climb bit after adenau? really puts the car under strain on that bit!

I purposely let off a little on the pull up the hill there cause it wouldnt pull past 90 on the standard turbo lol.

Poor tubbys..

mine did pull about 115mph up there , standard spec turbo and no map, but i did think it should have been faster until i realised how much of a hill it really is :rotz:

Usually touch well over 120 going up that. Torque & hybrid turbo FTW!

Only if you get caught ****ing oil out, im gimp mode it SHOULDNT be ****ing out any smoke/oil unless your have actually opened up turbo to the elements...

Anyway, looking back, yes no doubt the better thing to do esp if not 100% sure/clued up.

However the 2nd part of my msg was useful! 100 quid for a new one

Sorry to hear about it mate. Hope you get it sorted out soon.

Hi all,

Just thought id update the situation! I am now finally home after this nightmare of a holiday! My car is still in Germany at the moment, and will return home to me within two weeks . The RAC have been excellent though, provided hire cars, hotels etc all sorted and at no cost. (Make sure you take out european breakdown if your planning on going away!).

My dilemma now, is what to do with the car when it returns. It was running an Angel Tuning map, on the standard kkk turbo. After getting prices from my mechanic, he says buying a used turbo is a bit dodgy, and would reccomend a reconditioned unit.

I have also read on this site about Turbo Technics, and having the turbo turned into a hybrid. Will this turbo work with the current map, or am I going to have to budget again for another map? I dont really want lots more power, I just dont want the turbo to go pop again!

Any info will be much appreciated!

Si.

You will need another turbo to get "the treatment" - The £100 one mentioned more than once above is a typical one you could send away for hybrid work. Otherwise you're looking at around £800 odd for an out-the-box bulletproof hybrid turbo, based on the stock turbo.

Cheers for the quick response Jason. Im very nackered after this week so need a good nights sleep now! Im going to ring Turbo Technics tomorrow, and have a chat with them. So if I were to puchase this turbo mentioned, how much will Turbo Technics charge me to have 'the treatment?' Hopefully a resonable saving over one off of the shelf. Would this turbo work with the current remap that is on the car however?

Only turbo technics have the answer to that. ;) I have no clue at all.

Id not pay more than 500 for a hybrid kkk unit to get worked on personally. so a saving of 300 quid maybe a tad more? the remap would work with it, but it wouldnt be ideal... id ask them to tweak the map a tad for the issues of ur turbo blowing up

Out of interest what power are you running/was running

The car was running around the 175bhp mark. Im perfectly happy with that amount of power, its just that I want a reliable unit that will work with the remap really. I always drove the car with sympathy, and let the turbo cool down after every drive, and I would not consider myself to drive cars hard, I think the combination of a long uphill section on the ring, and possibly something wrong with the turbo (however I wont know without the diagnosics being done).

So would the map would work with a hybrid? But would it be horrible to drive? Or you mean it could be made better by having the remap tweaked again? I will see what the remap company I used say about having it tweaked for me.

If you hit an armco, you would also be paying for the repair of that, 70Euro per metre I believe, some places have 2 or 3 armcos stacked vertically so it would then be 2 or 3 X 70euros. Damage costs can really add up.

Without being rude, what has that got to do with anything that you quoted from me?
