How Much Coolant ?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've just topped my coolant up today. It was a bit below the min level. There's not much info out there on how often you need to change the coolant or how much is required when topping up. I can't find anywhere in the manual that says how long between coolant changes. I asked at the motor factors and the coolant is described as 'five year life' so a five year life seems to be a reasonable assumption, I'll do it next year

I also wondered about how much coolant is required so I went out and did some rough measurements and some maths and came up with the following :-

so next time you need to top up the coolant, you know how much to mix before you start.

The coolant in my Passat was not intended to be replaced at regular intervals and only topped up if necessary and after 11 years I never needed to top it up. The garage may have done so when it was serviced but I never saw any charges for anti-freeze listed on the bills.

It appears to be the same in my Octavia as the instruction manual says "The cooling system does not require any maintenance under normal operating conditions." (see ?koda Auto - The new ?koda Octavia - Documentation and also the links from this page regarding inspecting the level and replenishing the coolant.

They should hopefully drain it when you get the water pump and cambelt done.

It's a 1.4 TSI with a chain driven camshaft so hopefully there'll be no need to replace it.

I've noticed on some posts here that for engines with a cambelt it should be changed every 40,000 miles. The Passat I had recommended a change at 80,000 miles and fortunately as I had only done 72,000 miles before it went for the scrappage allowance I never had the expense of replacing it

I think out of the last 4 VAG cars I have had I have needed to top up the coolant once. If you're losing it best to get it checked for leaks.
