MSN Virus help.

Featured Replies

Hello all,

This is the final straw.

Tonight a friend was asking me for help - Sending images over MSN with me saving them and looking at them.

A URL link pops up with http://IMageshack.org/i/image.jpg I click on it thinking 'Oh, he is starting to be clever' saved the image and closed the convo after helping him and went to bed.

Tonight I had - "Why are you sending me links?". I couldn't even see that I was in the news feed but sure enough - I have a virus/trojan ect .

So - Deleted the .pif file then a full virus scan and still I'm having the same link sent to every contact.

Then I went for a system restore and had 'Sorry this can't be done' - Quick and easy fix to remove me sending this link on to other people? It looks like it's hiding behind a MS-DOS short cut (which I also deleted).

Still no luck - Help! :o

Oh and nothing is picking up the fact I have a virus or a trojan - All scans are fine :(

Many thanks,

Rob.

remove live hyperlink

To be honest Rob it sounds like a malaware bug.....and that doesn't show up as a virus.....last one that managed to find it's way on to my pc took ages and a lot patience to get rid of.

Try putting the url into google as search for (that particular url) malware and see what comes up, I can guarantee someone has had this already and there will be a cure out there .....i couldn't get rid of mine for a while as if you don't delete all the code in one sitting it will self repair itself

Try the Mcafee stinger - which has the top hard to remove stuff.

if not they should have something to kill it.

If it's what I think it is where you will 'sign in' send messages and sign out again, try changing your password. Worked for my friends who had it.

Changing your password is a good start.

The next thing you could try, as long as you don't mind starting from scratch back to default settings of messenger, uninstall MSN, and then run a search for folders with your email address as the folder name. Delete all folders in the locations that have your email (and anyone elses if you want a really clean install) then try again. You may also want to manually search your registry or run CCLeaner scans on your PC afterwards, to make things really tidy. I fixed my sisters laptop with this over the top method when she had the same problem.

If you are not quite sure what to do then give me a PM.

If you have a trojan, then changing the password makes no difference. No?

Correct, it will make no difference at all. MSN was the source, now its installed it no longer needs MSN to do its thing.

Getting rid of trojans is a nightmare, if you still have the trojan try running an app called combofix, use google to search and download the latest version and run it. Takes about 20 mins but removes quiet a few trojans if found.

There is also Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware? This has cleaned up several PC's successfully for me
