Insurance claim question

Featured Replies

Hi there, just looking for some advice without going into great detail.

Last night the drivers side wing mirror on my VRS got taken out (well the glass is completely shattered and was hanging off). I was driving down a single carriageway 40 limit road. There were parked cars to my off side causing the road to narrow (about 5 or 6 of them). I saw a car in the distance coming towards me slow down and seem to stop prior to the parked cars. By this point I was just about to enter the line of parked cars. This car then decided to pull out and go, I braked hard but this car drove past and smacked my mirror. I was as far over to the pavement as I could go.

The car in question then didn't even stop despite a massive bang as their mirror hit mine. I saw brake lights as they got past the parked cars, they then accelerated away! I saw them turn into a side road so did a u-turn, went in their direction and driving into an estate saw a car I believed to be theirs with the drivers mirror folded in. The driver was walking away from the car so I had to stop them and ask if they had just collided with my car and could I have a look at their mirror. They were then really funny with me wanting to exchange details saying it would go as 50/50. I didn't see the point in getting into a massive debate with them.

I'm now thinking, is it even worth me claiming on insurance, because am I right in thinking if the insurers go 50/50 I stand to lose my no claims? There were no independent witnesses however my girlfriend was in the car with me.

However I feel I did the right thing getting details because if I do need to go through insurance it is an option.

Report it to the police, he failed to stop after an accident and could be charged for that.

The parked cars were on his side of the road so he should of given way to you, so (IMO) he is at fault and his insurance should foot the repair bill and not go 50/50.

BUT of course that is in an ideal world, we are talking about insurance companies here - a lot of them will do their utmost not to payout if they can help it.

Don't underestimate the cost of a new mirror either, my step daughter borrowed out old Octavia just after we had bought it, she proceeded to get the whole mirror broken off whilst the car was 'parked' (along with a dented wing, scratched alloy etc) IIRC a new electric mirror is over £200 (painted)

The only problem is that she has now fulfilled her obligations now by exchanging details even though she did not stop at the time. I know she would always say that she did not realise damage had been caused.

I've just seen you can get a complete mirror unit that needs spraying for 40 quid on ebay brand new. The casing itself is still intact just the mirror has shattered and I had to disconnect the wiring to take the mirror off. Its possible the mirror still works and just needs replacement glass.

If it's just the mirror I believe you can get a heated mirror unit from TPS for less than £30, or therabouts.

I had a very similar situation on Friday last week and when I found out how much the mirror would cost I couldn't be bothered to pursue her insurance.

Sorry who are TPS, can't find them by google?

Thanks for all the replies.

Protected no claims and low excess for me next yr, I would have no qualms about trying to screw her insurance for it then.

The trade parts specialists :) - despite the name any normal consumer can buy from them (I think!)

Cheers for that. I need to check first whether I can just put the glass back on and the motors etc work or if its a whole new unit I need.

You can check the motor without the glass attached, also I used a voltmeter to check that power was still making it to the wires :)
