I did the SAME.... crap foam membrane with a bit of fluff behind the magnet. Had to reseal the upper 1/2 of the foam, to prevent water entering the speaker, the other side was done much better. Rear tweeters disconnected... BASS bloody hell turn the bass down!!!

I'm still going to uprade the speakers and HU/changer...

AAAGH ! WATER COMING THROUGH THE LH SPEAKER GRILLE THIS MORNING !!!

Guess it's time for the sticky-backed plastic, Blue Peter styleee ...

I was thinking about doing this, but in the back of my mind I have an idea that the membrane might be to do with the side airbag deployment. I don't know how the VAG system works, but in my last car (Vaux Omega), the system had a pressure sensor in the door. Because the door cavity was sealed (maybe not completely airtight - ref speaker wires poked through, but close enough), the sensor detected a side collision by an increase in pressure in the door, triggering the airbag.

So cutting a hole in the membrane might prevent this from happening. That said, I haven't taken the speaker out so haven't looked in the door for a sensor (or lack of...)

Well, I don't have side airbags but do have plastic membranes...might just be

standard design though...

Rob.

IIRC, cars have had a plastic membrane on doors well before side airbags were introduced.

I understand concerns regarding triggering of side airbags but I kind of think (hope) it would be a little more sophisticated (some sort of lateral G detector?).

suppose a good thing would be to actually find out why the doors are sealed with a membrane in the first place. My guess would be to keep damp/wet out and for noise insulation (it seems quite good at keeping sound in;))

Cheers.

Adrian.

Do i still need to do this on my 03 RS?

ffelan

Not if your bass sounds ok ;)

define ok?

it doesnt seem too bad but from some of the other posts it sounds like i wouldnt want a sub... and my car sounds like it needs one?

Hi Paul,

always a sticky subject this.......it depends on what you want.

I changed my front speakers, the HU and unplugged the rear tweeters and I happy with the way it sounds now. I may change the rears but am undecided at this time.

Bass buzz is no more and sound quailty is good. My HU has an equalizer and at some point I will let the system optimise itself for the car environment.

If you feel you need more bass you can change the rear speakers but I feel their positioning in not optimal for air movement so a sub is probably the way to go.

Just MHO.

Cheers.

I've got an 03 RS and when I removed the foam cups the bass did noticeably improve - BUT water started leaking in the passenger door.

It seems there is no membrane behind the foam cups - I had to do a "Blue Peter" job with polyethylene and duct tape ! :)

cool so if i replace the std speakers with non paper ones i will double benefit when i remove the cups...

I'd also advocate removing the cups off the rear speakers too if you haven't already!

Rob.

what cups....

your doing this to confuse me now.....

Hmm...on the RS's I've seen into the boots of, there are "carpet puddings" over the

underside of the rear speakers...haven't got them on mine though!

Rob.

not on mine?

I have those cups... Those bad?

Well, I just figure that it would be like putting carpet across the back of a hifi speaker - generally

a bit of a muffler. I guess it would come down to personal preference though! :D

rob.

Thought I would "test" out my stereo on the way home last night.

At high volumes (for me anyway) there's definately something missing; the bass is not clear but there definately isn't any of that bass buzz from the speakers.

I think I probably need to change the rears but I'm considering putting some in the parcel shelf.

Suggestions/comments?

I don't want a sub or any amps.

Cheers.

Adrian.

The benefit of putting speakers in the parcel shelf as opposed to the side shelves is the

size of the speakers you can use. Some people would say the small ones aren't naturally

suited to giving good bass, and I'd say it's a fair point.

However, I think that the Octavia set up uses the fronts for most of the "difficult" sounds, using

the rears as fill-ins.

Personally I'd say definitely change your rears, it just depends on how cheaply you want to do

it as to whether you mount on the parcel shelf or the side shelves! :D

Rob.

I definately go along with the rears doing the filling in. Removing the rear tweeters defiantely improves the sound when using high volumes but there is a "gap" a lower volumes where the tweeters used to be.

Rob, what are rear speaker sizes again? Would have liked to go the Infiintiy route again but, I don't think they will give the bass I want (judgin by the fronts) so probably will choose something like a Pioneer.

Cheers.

Adrian.

Yeah, that gap's exactly why I went for "louder" rear speakers, and with a tweeter in them.

They're 13cm, the Pioneer ones are good for 30 quid (and better than standard!), and do seem

to be proper "dance" speakers. Lower frequency response than the Infinity's too...

Rob.

is the std head unit crap?

what matches best in the skoda... vw is easy but skoda is not as easy to match

Think the DACs not bad in it, but it's not all that powerful. Personally I'd rather keep the

inside looking stock so as to stop prying eyes/hands putting my window through!

Rob.

so would I especially after what heppend to the merc... but i dont own tapes and ive seen more powerful rice puddings?
