Bump stops splitting at the rear

Featured Replies

Hi all, while fiddling today I noticed this:

On both sides, which suggests to me something has caused it.

I've noticed the rear has been bouncing a bit lately - wouild this explain it?

Is this down to me having coilovers? Should I have fitted shorter ones the rear is down about 70mm from standard.

How soon will these need replacing? I've got a fairly good idea of how to do them, jack car up, rear wheels off, remove arch liner, two bolts at the top and out, bolt at the bottom and out it pops?

Hardest part is removing rear wheel - I've failed twice now due to it being wedged on.

Thanks for any advice.

soon, but maybe your shocks are getting a bit tired, hence bouncing

when the bump stop fails the dust shield attached will drop down

The coilover shocks have only been fitted for about 6,000 miles! the bouncing is probably cos I'm running them with the adjuster perches out

maybe you will need to shorten the bump stops , there is a "how to" somewhere on here

they are breaking up due to being rested on more with your lower suspension

Thats what I would of thought. Probably explain the bouncing as your riding on the bump stops.

Probably a good idea to buy some new ones from the dealers and cut them down if you plan on running it that low. Personally dont understand why people drive round on the bump stops. The ride/handling must be terrible. Lower isn't always better unless your after looks then the lower the better

the ride is pretty bouncy on the back tbh, I did wonder why, these bump stops are probably the problem. Does anyone have a P/N, and is the ibiza cupra tdi ones shorter as standard?

Sorry no. Did buy some a few years back. Dont think they were much.

Good question about the cupra ones. Anyone know the answer?

If you wish to shorten the bump stops here's how I did it without removing the wheel (this will be good news for you)

By removing the centre portion of the bump stop I shortened mine approx 30mm.

Method:

1. Jack up.

2. Using new-blade Stanley knife cut through the upper recess (do this by applying

pressure to the blade as you rotate the bump stop with your other hand (leather gloved in my case).

Bottom section is now free from the upper.

3. Now, cut a slit vertically to the lower recess (this simplfies removal of the piece you'll be discarding once the lower section is detached).

4. Repeat 2 . for the lower recess.

5. Remove middle piece.

6. Re-join the remaining two pieces (I used Loctite Super Glue; kept pressure on the join for a minute or so.)

Did this a couple of years ago and the stops are still in one piece.

So on mine breaking as it is I am guessing I just need to finish cutting at the "break" then cut above the bottom donut, then glue togehter?

I've had a look but not confident to cut them in situ especially with the damper rod there - sharp blade + superglue + exposed damper rod + lack of confidnce is a recipe for disaster!

I've had a search around and according to this thread:

Improving Ride Comfort - SEAT Cupra.net - SEAT Forum

The Ibiza rear bumpstops are shorter than the Fabia.

Does anyone have ETKA to confirm this? Possibly the Ibiza Cupra ones?

EDIT:

Vag cat lists the followijng for the Ibiza MK4:

- stop buffer / for models with heavy duty suspension

123MM / PR-1JB

- stop buffer

67MM / PR-1JE,1JF, 1JJ

And for the Fabia lists these:

- stop buffer / F 6Y-1X012 501>>* / F 6Y-1-160 001>>*

H=123MM /

- stop buffer / F >> 6Y-1X012 500* / F >> 6Y-1-160 000*

H=120MM /

So I am guessing that Ibiza 67mm one should fit?

More digging uncovered this:

In the pics the bumpstops look a LOT shorter than the fabia ones:

Seat Ibiza Mk4 Rear Shock Absorber Replacement

Also whats wrong with just cutting some arch liner away to get the bolts? Saves ****ing about with the arch liner

Managed to have a look at ETKA, this is what I found

Fabia - two heights listed a 123mm and a 120mm

Ibiza - two heights again listed 123mm and a 67mm

67mm part numbers listed under the FR and Cupra models:

Cupra - 6Q0 512 135 A

FR - 6Q0 512 131 D

This might go a way to explain the "harsher" ride on the sporty seats - shorter bump stops and "uprated" dampers.

I'm going to order some Cupra ones, and hope they fit, I know the assembleys are the same, can anyone see any reason they wont fit? Has anyone tried it before?

you shouldn't have a problem fitting them , and you've dug up that nice guide to follow too,

let us know how much the bump stops are

To be honest, from the last DIY you attempted... you really should be leaving it to someone qualified

Trust me, I'm an oldie and it was a dawdle, honestly. The damper rod is impervious - it's steel after all. However, if confidence is the issue then perhaps your right. Buy the Seats.

OK well the Seats arrived today -still waiting on the damper covers though as on back order...

Not sure what to think?

TECHNICALLY, as the Fabia and Ibiza rear suspension mounting are the same, they should fit?

Any thoughts? They do look a differnt design rather than just shorter... not sure if to risk trying to fit them....

P/N was for the Ibiza FR - 6Q0 512 131D and also lists as Leon and Golf rear buffers.

Standard Fabia P/N is 6Q0 512 131 B - so theyre from the same stable

Any ideas/ advice from people that have taken apart both Fabia and Ibiza rear suspension?

Wouldn't it be soooo much easier if Powerflex did some shorter ones for the Fabia?

I'm going to fit some Eibachs soon and was going to trim the bumpstops but would much prefer to just replace them with an "un-butchered" set!

It's a simple job to remove the rear damper. Jack it up. Remove the wheel and arch liner. Undo the bottom damper bolt and the two bolts at the top. Simple.

Must order myself sone of the Ibiza bump stops when it's renewal time. Cheers for the info.

shouldn't be any problems with them fitted

Quick question with regards to the black plastic sleeve dust covers - how are they seperated from the bump stop ?

Quick question with regards to the black plastic sleeve dust covers - how are they seperated from the bump stop ?

they will just pull off, they fit onto the squarish lip sticking out near the bottom of the bump stop

Fitted today.

All I can is FANTASTIC.

I have a road near my house, a B road, and it is really uneven, I used to drive down it and it felt like I was a little boat on the choppy sea.

No more. Brilliant. Soaks up the bumps now instead of bounding about all over the place - I used to be able to see the rear of the car in the mirror bouncing up and down over tiny bumps - not any more.

I guess this was because the bump stop was doing the work the damper should have been doing!

The new ones are quite a bit shorter than the old ones - not sure if this will cause any problems long term? But no clunking or bumping or anything like that from the rear so I presume everything is ok.

I wasnt sure whether to fit the black cap on the news ones - but I did anyway, just tapped it gently into the top mount with a hammer then the bump stop clips into it and the top mount.

Some pics for comparison

I would strongly advise anyone running coilovers and standard bump stops to fit these or cut down.

The ride quality afterwards is remarkable.

The one disadvantge I can see is that the dust covers dont come down as far now - however on mine they do still cover the steel damper rod so should be ok.

I did order some Ibiza FR dust covers but they were on back order so these will have to do

Excellent news. Must feel totally different now. :)

doubt i'll ever lower, but good to see someone with the man plums to try something new :)

Just bumping this again so EVERYONE with coilovers can see this.

I do 40 miles a day commute and what a difference they have made.

Absolutely fantastic. I love the car again.
