Headlight Bulbs advice please.

Featured Replies

Morning all,

Ok i'm wanting some advise about headlight bulbs. Having had cars with xenons for around the last 6 years i've kinda lost touch when it comes to the old halogen headlight bulb market.

We picked up my folk's new car on Friday, (V70), and i had my first night time drive in it last night and decided that the headlight bulbs could do with an upgrade. I was in Halfrauds yesterday and noticed the vast array of different bulbs 50%, 80% 90% brighter etc etc etc. and thought i'd better start asking on here. :)

Now what i want to know is two things.....

1. I'm wanting something nice & bright and with a nice crisp white look to them. But not the one's that look like cheap xenon effect etc...

2. More importantly.... They need to be reliable, long lasting bulbs as they will be lit 100% of the time the car is being driven as the car's DRLs are basically the headlight dip beam so day or night they are lit.

So quite simple really a good bright, crisp white, long lasting bulb please.

Cheers

Dave.

Philips Xtreme are good.

The Halfords +90% are OK PROVIDED THE 2 FOR 1 OFFER is still on.

Philips Xtreme from me too

Check Powerbulbs site and don't forget the Brisky Freedom discount :)

I'm liking the Philips Xtreme one's..... Anyone know what they are like with regard lifetime. As i say they will be on 100% of the time as the DRL's are the dip lights. Didn't want to spend £20-odd quid and then they only last for a couple of months etc....

Just looked on Powerbulbs and can only get the Xtremes for the dip as the main beam are the weird 9005/HB3 bulbs. To be honest though the main beams didn't seem too bad last night so may leave them at the mo.

Cheers

Dave.

Is it a brand new V70 Dave? If not, which plate? Do your folks actually want the DRLs on?

I'd say the Xtremes were good for longevity. I've certainly never had to change one and tend to use them for dipped use in most cars I've had. You may say I don't keep my cars long enough though!

It's a brand new 59 plate V70 so it's not a case of being able to turn off the headlights like on older volvo models. If you turn the lights to the off position the DRL's kick in etc....

Can't speak for everyone, but ime they lasted about 9 months (they went within 2 weeks of each other). Likewise the Osram +90% Nightbreakers which they replaced had a similar life span. In the end I couldn't justify £30 a year and the hassle of losing skin to change them so I just bought a pair of el-cheapo regular Halfords bulbs which seem to do a good job and still haven't gone pop

Chris

I've found the 90% have a very short life and wouldn't buy them again.

50% osram silverstars seem to have a good life, otherwise I'd aim for 30% brighter bulbs (most cheap bulbs are now this level) as they seem to last a similar time to the normal bulbs IMHO.

I had osram silverstars in and they were good and lasted 3+years (in which i did 70k ish miles, so they were used).

I've had nightbreakers in for the last year or so, with none of the longevity issues some seem to....

Philips Vision plus are still a damned good bulb, Been running these since they came out in my previous car and SWMBO's current and previous car

I had a set of Halfords +90% die in the wifes furby after 13mths and they replaced them without issue.

I can argue with Halfords and generally win about stuff like bulbs as they know nothing!

Plus if they do fail then they are 10 a penny and bloody everywhere!

Hello Members,

Would you say these recommended upgrade bulbs generate a lot more heat, and so degrade the headlamp interior reflective surface??

Thanks. Ian. 24/09/2009.
