Flat battery... not a funny thing

Featured Replies

Ok, so had a wonderfull time running around with the vRS at the weekend, even fitted my new Dension unit. Didn't move the car today and at tea time, a weak sounding alarm starts going off. No lights flashing and as I've had this before, I knew the battery had gone flat! And I mean flat! :rotz:

So i've got it on charge, but i'm worred could this be anything to do with fitting the Dension? I've access to VCDS, and know how to do a basic scan, but when I eventually get some charge in the battery, what do I look for to see if it's just a battery, or if its the Dension, or something even more problematic? I think the battery will still be under warrenty, so that should be resolveable, but if there is another issue, there is no point fitting a new battery until thats sorted!

Any help appreciated!

I noticed that you were interested in the group buy for the aerial adaptor for the columbus sat nav, have you updated the firmware to the latest version? There seems to be a problem if you run this firmware with certain can-bus interfaces that flattens your battery.

If you have upgraded your fw try going back to the original version to see if that cures the problem.

Cheers Chris, I haven't updated the FW since getting the unit about a year ago, but as soon as there is some power I'll have a look at the version that's on there anyway!

Check you have wired the dension correctly and not got the switched and permanent wires the wrong way round. Dont forget the octy has no switched 12v supply behind the headunit and you need to connect to the fusebox.

Don't know about the latest Dension units, but mine just plugged into where the CDC plugged in with no other wiring apart from a ground/earth connection, although I had to change the earth connection when I fitted my Columbus.

Well hopefully once you get your juice back your Dension works better than mine - mine will not allow anything other than ipodui mode which is not a great deal of use to me.

Shark_90 supplied a firmware update which unfortunately didn't fix the issue so I'm a bit stuck .

...... and wishing I'd bought another interface instead!

I managed to get some charge in it over night and got it checked at the local Battery shop (they offer free testing!) They said the battery should be ok after a proper charge, but that there was an "noticable drain" even when the engine etc was off and had been allowed to settle for a while.

VCDS had hugh issues when I tried to scan, and kept crashing when it got to the BT controler. The BT Phone was also no longer showing in maxi dot. Now the back of my MFD3 is a "bit cramped" to say the last with the BT wiring, and when we'd fitted the Dension, it was even worse, so I figured it was either the Dension or an issue with the wiring, so I pulled the MFD3 out and disconnected everything, before fitting it back (no Dension wiring). The Battery shop tested it again, and no there was no noticeable drop in voltage & the BT kit works again :o.

I'm not going to be able to tinker around for a while as I've no ability to risk another flat battery, however as soon as I can i'll reconnect the Dension by moving the loom and see if it was simply crushed wires etc!

Thanks to all for the support & advice!
