A load of balls?

Featured Replies

I have a creaking nose from the front suspesion when turning the wheel at low speeds, my local Skoda dealer checked it out and says it could be 'dry' lower ball joints and that they need to be replaced.

Surely if they're 'dry' a bit of grease should remedy the situation? Are they trying to scam me?

For info my car is a Fabia VRS with 60 000 miles.

Cheers

I'd say first thing to check with low speed creaking on the Fabia are the wishbone bushes - both of ours had had them done around 60k. Should be more of an issue with speedbumps than turning, though, so maybe it is something like the ball joint or the top mount.

To be fair, AIUI, the bearings on these are sealed, so if the grease has leaked out, it's due to an underlying problem, and the only way to be sure of a fix is to replace the part. Having said that, yours wouldn't be the first dealer to just replace parts until the problem's fixed rather than investigating it properly, so it's definitely worth checking it isn't something like the bushes before you proceed...

Thanks. I didn't realise they were sealed, but of course they must be given the amount of crap they must be subjected to down there.

To be fair to them they did say they were going to investigate the existing joints first but that it was most likely they need to be replaced given my mileage.
