Fabia 1.4 TDI Intermittent Start

Featured Replies

Moved SWMBOs Furby last night and it didn't start off the button like it normally does, but didn't really think too much about it. Started 2nd go no problem.

This morning it started OK, but after returning from a short journey refused to start after numerous attempts and the glow plug light started to flash. Went back to it after a few hours and the car started, but the glow plug light is flashing and the engine managment light is on.

I've just taken the car for a run out and it drives as well as normal, plenty of go, no excessive smoke in the headlights of the car behind, but it did take two goes to start it again and I still have the flashing glow plug and engine management light on.

Anyone had the same fault?

Before anyone says brake lights or brake light switch - I've already checked and all three

are working correctly and that wouldn't prevent the car from starting I don't think.

Sounds fairly simple, it's telling you it needs new glow plugs.

Forgot to mention that I checked each glow plug and they all have a very low resistance, which I assume means that they are OK.

Also, car starts better when cold than when slightly warm.

What fault codes / DTC's are stored? ;)

What fault codes / DTC's are stored? ;)

Don't know, as I haven't got VAGcom and the only local member that I know with it is probably in Aylesbury at the moment so I can't get it scanned to find out.

Turns out to be an intermittent fault on the engine speed sensor.

The glow plug light flashes for many many faults, most of which are nothing to do with the glow plugs.

Turns out to be an intermittent fault on the engine speed sensor.

Fault is back again!

Started the car this morning and it struggled a bit. OK once started but with glow plug light flashing and engine management light on.

Scanned for faults and found 16705 which is again related to the engine speed sensor.

I cleared the fault and the lights went off and the code does not come back.

I have been in to my local friendly VW dealer and they have confirmed that there are no fault codes on the car. Suggestions are a possible fault in the loom between the crank position sensor and ECU or another faulty sensor giving an incorrect signal and making the ECU think that the signal from the crank sensor is incorrect.

Any thoughts anyone?

Think that this is finally sorted. The fault code was apparently for the cam shaft position sensor, not the crank sensor which I had replaced. Doh!

Normal service has now been resumed.......
