Air in diesel fuel system? How to get it out?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am experiencing some minor engine droputs while accelerating the first few minutes after starting the engine (a Fabia Combi 1.4 TDI from 2004).

I have noticed, that when I turn on the ignition (but without starting the engine), that there is a sound from the diesel pump (or some other pump in the system), which sounds like some air or something is being pumped around somewhere. It just lasts for approx 1 second.

Could that be the reason for the dropouts? And if so who do I get rid of that air?

Really hope you can help.

Regards

Malke

that noise is normal , it is just the pump in the tank pressurizing the fuel system, it is more noticible when the tank is less than 3/4 full, i can't usually hear mine when the tank is full, so i assume yours will be the same

We also have a 2004 Fabia 1.4 TDI Combi and it makes the same noise when the ignition is first turned on and has done since we bought it 3 years ago. As Ric04vrs has already said, this is just the lift pump in the tank pressurising the system. I think that your problem may lie elsewhere.

Just a thought, but have you recently replaced the fuel filter withot replacing the two "O" rings on the fitting which is held in by a clip?

This could allow air into the system.

I have just had to replace the crank position sensor on ours, but as this failed it meant that the car took 2 goes to get it to start. When it failed completely the car would not start at all for a while, but when it did gave a flashing glow plug light and engine management light.

Do you have any other symptoms?
