1.6 Tdi CR engine

Featured Replies

I have just ordered a new Octy Greenline with the new 1.6 Tdi Common Rail engine.

On looking through the brochure, the engine is stated to be a SOHC with two valves per head. On looking up the German web page, their 1.6 Tdi CR has gained an extra camshaft and has four valves per head? If anyone out there has one of these new engines, can they have a quick look to verify if it is a DOHC engine?

It would be just typical of VW to design an inferior engine for the UK market?

Skoda UK literature, both printed and web-based is notoriously inaccurate. German's however are an accurate people, so I would trust their spec.

Would be odd for it to be SOHC with 2 valves per cylinder considering it's 2.0 brothers are both DOHC and 4 valve.

Audi list the 1.6TDI in the A3 as having 4 valves per cylinder, i'll leave you all to 'do the math' :D

There are 8 and 16 valve versions of the 140PS 2.0TDI available but IIRC the 8v unit fitted to the Superb is a space saving measure and nothing else.

My old 8v PD130 seriously ran out of puff at higher revs and I can't see them going back a step with the 1.6.

The Missus has the new Seat Ibiza 1.6 CR TDI (She's out, so can't check the engine now). Seat do not list that level of detail in the manual or on the website, but Parkers has it listed as an 8 valve, but it feels like 16...

Nice pokey engine, but I am disappointed with the economy. They quote 67mpg (combined), but if I drive my commute (30 mile mix) like a Nun, I struggle to get up to 55mpg - cruising at 70 gives you a real time reading of less than 50... Compared to my Octy vRS TFSI,which is quoted as 37mpg (combined), but for the same journey and driving can manage nearly 45mpg!

It's only done 1000 miles, but I can't see mileage making much of a difference - it needs a sixth gear (and some more low end torque to use it).

I'll be interested to see how the engine will handle the extra weight of the Octy.

Dervs are tight as a drum for thousands of miles, SWMBOs vRS TDI is returning decent MPG now and it has just gone past 18k.
