Electrical fault?

Featured Replies

Since i took delivery of my Superb in June 2009 i have had strange electrical faults.

I will try to explain it as clear as i can.

Day running lights on AUTO and it was at night with darkness, switched indicator on and it started to click fast as if i had a bulb out, but all bulbs were working. Opened drivers door and interior lights came on for 1 second then went off again. Bulb failure light on dash but yet again all bulbs working. Switched engine off and took key out of slot locked the doors waited few mins unlocked the doors started car and everything was fine!

Any ideas?

Early indications of a control unit failure, IMO. Exactly what happened to me, followed by "bulb out" warning becoming a permanent feature, plus warnings that the reversing lights, then the offside driving light needed checking. New CU resolved it all.

Did they only replace it after it was permantly faulty?

The whole process went along these lines:

  1. Indicator on LHS at double-speed, but all bulbs working. Reported by telephone.
  2. "Bulb out" light in dash came on - booked in for diagnostic machine.
  3. MaxiDot messages began - "Check RH Indicator Bulb"
  4. Put on diag machine - nothing found - dealer making further enquiries.
  5. MaxiDot messages escalate to include "Check Reversing Lights" and "Check RH Fog Light."
  6. Second visit to dealer (for them to try some bridging tests with a wire sent from the factory).
  7. New Control Unit (behind dash, near to driver's door) ordered as there were none in the UK.
  8. Third visit to dealer, replacement CU fitted, no re-coding required, perfect ever since.

The file of paperwork on this fault was practically an inch thick by this time. I was amazed at how many hoops the poor dealer had to jump through before the powers-that-be would authorise a replacement part, especially as I was in an "out-of-order" mode at the time (better now).

Good service from my dealer (Caffyns of Tonbridge and their After Sales Manager, the lovely Teresa), the time taken was not their fault or their doing.

I'd not expect an immediate replacement if my experience is in any way typical, but - as I hope you can see - that's probably direction from way up on high.

HTH :)
