PD140 Engine cover rattling at idle

Featured Replies

Hi guys, since my last service my Octy has developed a loose engine cover, I don't think it increases the nosie whilst driving by at idle you can here it rattle. I've proved this by holding the cover down on the front left hand side whilst idling and its quiet. Is this a common issue and whats the fix ?

Check to make sure the rubber bungs are in good order, IIRC there are 3 of them and the top left corner hooks onto a metal fitting.

I had to attack mine with superglue, the cover is more than one piece of plastic and the two bits were rattling against each other.

Failing that, take the damn thing off completely

Just had the cover off, it seems as if its one piece of plastic filled with foam and the 3 posts on the engine fit into 3 rubbercups in the cover. These cups are loose in the cover, can these be replaced and are they covered under warranty ?

There is an improved rubber cup. The part number is p/n 03G 103 184 C. They will cost you ~52p each from your Dealer.

See my post from a couple of weeks ago.

Hi wega, I think the rubber cups you're on about are different to mine, my cups fit in the actual engine cover and are about the size of a cotton reel in diameter. The locating pegs are fitted on the engine on my PD140.

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread but it's the closest I could find to my most recent niggle:

When my Mk2 Octavia VRS idles (once warm and driven for a few minutes bit) it has developed a tendancy to randomly start making a tapping noise every so often. This sounds very much like a loose plastic part in the engine bay ("hollow" knocking sound, not metallic, hence I think it's plastic). The noise goes away immediately if you blip the throttle by the smallest amount posible and if I open the window I cannot hear it coming from outside the car so much - more like it resonates from the engine, through the bulkhead and into the interior. If I'm travelling slowly (no wind or road noise), depress the clutch and wait for the revs to die to idle it can just about be heard too.

Annoyingly the noise always seems to have gone away by the time I get home, maybe it's the combination of tight turns up the lane to my drive moving something to stop it knocking but when I do one day get home and it is rattling I intend to have a bloody good look at it, ideally with a 2nd person as a helper (the misses I guess!) I guess I can try moving/pressing on the engine cover to see if that stops the noise. Is there anything else plastic that's likely to be rattling only at idle? How do you actually remove the engine cover (without breaking it as mine has a small crack in the top left already from previous ownwer/services) to inspect these rubber bushes mentioned above?

Thanks guys.

Looked at this again today. Rattle is loudest (not horrifically loud but I can hear it when waiting at lights etc.) when I put my head right into the driver's side footwell, possibly closest to the tunnel rather than wheel arch.

Pushed and prodded all of the interior trim I could reach and some of the plastic on the underside of the car under the driver's footwell and still nothing. It only happens when the revs are very low (say 700-800; idling when warm), not when cold and not if you touch the throttle by the smallest amount.

I can't see anything obviously loose in the engine bay - if anywhere I guess it's likely to be nearer the exhaust. Incidentally, what's the thing that forms a return-like loop at the back of the engine on the bottom, near to the "transmission" tunnel - some form of oil pipes or something by the look of them as they're metal?
