Clutch Judder

Featured Replies

I have a 2.0 TDI PD that has 20,000 miles on the clock and has only been driven by me from new. It has developed a judder when pulling away from cold. The judder goes away after a few clutch take up operations and is OK when warmed up. Just before the judder gets better it tends to bite agressively before take up. Is this anything to worry about and will a dealer be interested in this problem as it is not present all the time. The car is still under warranty. I have read about DMF problems on this site and wondered if this was the begining of something. Thanks for any comments in advance!

There a already a few threads on this, do a search for "clutch judder".

I've already commented on a couple of them, I too have experienced the same problem on my 6,000 mile 2008 2.0 TDi PD Scout as have quite a few others as it would seem.

I'll be asking my local dealer to take a good look on my cars first service :thumbdwn:.

I recently had the identical clutch judder problems with my 2007 1.9 TDI Octavia which was eventually identified as the DMF and replaced under warranty. This was after three visits to the dealership who were apparently unable to find fault. It pays to be persistant and I would not advise having them try to address this when in for service. Have them deal with this as seperate fault because that is exactly what it is. Good Luck !

I had judder also ( mine is a 1.9 ) and was the same cold or hot and i wouldn,t dare do a 2nd gear pull away at low speed because iam sure it would of broke the flywheel.

My dealer replaced the flywheel and clutch assembly under warranty but used a single mass flywheel on mine and not another DMF.It makes the car feel like it should have been like this from new.But as far as i know there is no SMF as yet avaliable for the 2.0 TDi.

I have a 1.9 elegance and experienced the same problem after 14000 miles. The dealer took in the car overnight as I only had the problem from cold. The mechanic stalled the car twice trying to get it to the service bay!

They had the car for three days (gave me a courtesy car ) and replaced the clutch and flywheel all under warrantee. Drives really well now, I think you adjust your driving to the shudder and compensate , it is probable worse than you think. Get it in to the dealer and don’t take “You must ride the clutch sir” or such like.

Best of luck.

Matt.

Mine judders too but only when stone cold like on a morning. After a few goes it's fine for the rest of the day. Took it to a dealer and sure enough (because I didn't leave it overnight) they couldn't find anything wrong. Is this a sure symptom of a faulty DMF as I used to associate this with a clutch glazing over?

If so it's going back again.

I have the same issue on my 2008 140 Tdi. It has been doing it since about 5000 miles, I'm now on 11,000. It has been to the dealer once where I left it overnight, but as usual the Skoda Dealer could not find a problem. I have been asking Skoda UK if they are aware of any problems with DMF, and I have just recieved this response today:

Thank you for email dated 26 October 2009, regarding your vehicle.

I have referred your email to our Technical Support Team regarding your concerns.

They have confirmed that there is no known issue with the dual mass flywheel of your Octavia Estate Elegance. Also they have informed me that there are no plans to replace these with single mass flywheels.

If you still have concerns regarding your clutch I would advise you to take your vehicle to a Škoda retailer for them to carry out further investigations.

I guess I'm going to have to take mine back again, but it is so annoying that nearly every problem I have with my Octavia takes at least 3 visits to get the problem sorted out.

Has anyone out there had a Dual Mass Flywheel replaced with a Single Mass under warranty?

Yes i had mine done back in August. My Skoda dealer replaced the clutch assembly too and converted mine back to single mass flywheel.Unfortunately mine is a 1.9TDi where a SMF is readily avaliable from SUK but as yet there is not one for the 2.0TDi.These cars should have had this from the start because its a totally different driving experience now its converted and the response is great.

I also had that email from them when i contacted them also.
