hard to start when warm helllp

Featured Replies

hi guys, ive just got myself an octy estate 1.9tdi and im having a wee bit of bother with it..

it starts fine in the morning or whenever the engine is cold...but when its warm it turns over a good few turns before it starts...

any ideas?

apart from that i love these cars

There have been a few threads about hot starting issues recently, try searching (and save the kitten). A couple of causes that spring to mind are battery/starter motor problems which means the engine isn't turning over quick enough (at least 250rpm) or problems with the EGR/anti shudder valve which causes these sort of problems.

I was having start problems when my TDI was hot.......possibly because of slow cranking speed as advised above. My starter started to make an odd noise when it dis-engaged, and a fellow mechanic saidad it was dry gears in the motor assy. Removed the starter, took out the two long screws that hold teh saay together and pulled (gently) the freont off the motore body. The gearbox cover (plastic) was pryed off and the four gears inside greased up inc. the plain bearings.

Since I did this no more starter squealing when it dis-engages and the engine starts no problem when it is hot...

HI

Had this problem with my 110 bhp octavia found the problem in another thread on this site which was down to the battery ,had check my battery and it come up fully charged and health but replaced it and never looked back ,some other member said about temp. sensor but replaced this and no differnet at the time, all i can say is new battery sorted my problem.

CATSON

I took apart the starter motor and greased up teh gears in teh small gearbox between teh motor body abd the nose of the starter itself. Job took approx. 30 minutes total. Fix the problem with my 110 bhp TDI. Cheaper than a battery ..worth a try.

Oh dear another dead kitten

eddies: My TDi also suffers from the starter dis-engage squeal and warm start problem. I mentioned it to JKM at a recent service but they were not interested in looking at it. Is it an easy diy job, how much work is involved under the car ? I used to work on my cars years ago but no longer have any ramps, axle stands etc.

Thanks, Julian.

If a garage or dealer tells you you need a new injection pump, then go to a diesel injection specialist as the temp sensor inside of the pump can go.

Many garages will tell you it can't be replaced, but an injection specialist will tell you otherwise.
