Noisey 1.9TDi engine

Featured Replies

06 Octy 1.9tdi MK2 34K miles

Just had its 2nd service(main dealer). All filters changed, new discs and pads, brake fluid etc.

When i start up from cold there is a clatter from the engine but i think most are like this when cold but when at normal temp its just not as quiet as it used to be before the service. As i accelerate above 2000rpm giving it boost i get a grrrrrrrr kind of noise kinda like a clatter/knock and its hard to hear if its top or bottom end.Revving on idle there is no cam lobe tapping just on acceleration this noise is there.Tonight i was driving it through the gears to 4000rpm and it was very noisey inside the engine and almost got a misfire at 80mph onwards (private test road of course ;) )Its a bit worrying. The oil level is fine its spot on the line.Just seems like its got very thin oil in it going by the noise.I don,t think these suffer from engine probs do they? like big ends or conrods or tappets and cams? i really wnat to get it sorted as iam only 3 weeks away from the warranty expiring .

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

You seem unsure about the oil?? wrong grade oil its good-bye engine, not that I want to alarm you, but get back to garage quick and question grade of oil used!! and noises omitted.

Ian. 08/10/2009. :rofl::eek:

Assuming your car has no DPF you could have VW506.1 in there which is a 0W-30 oil or VW507.0 which is a 5W 30 oil.

I'd be asking your service garage for the name and grades of the oil put in as many places claim you can just use "0W-30" which isn't the case. All oils used have to meet the correct VW standard for the variable or fixed service plan as stated in the user manual.

Wrong oil and you will damage your engine, so it's worth getting it changed if it isn't the right stuff and soon.

If the service was at a main dealer then go back to them and get the problem noted in writing.

Just behind the engine cover you will see a plastic pipe about 2 and a half to 3 inches in diameter check that is not against the bulk head, mine was makeing a brrrrrr noise and that's what it was

Are you talking about the pipe that comes across from the airbox skippy?

Yes it runs around the back to the egr valve location, just got a bit of foam behind mine and all is quiet now

It should be fastened to the inlet manifold with torx screws matey. At least mine is anyway.

Is yours the BJB or the BKC engine?

same as yours a 105

I wonder if it's the platinum oil now used by Quantum to replace the previous Quantum spec for the 1.9 PD engines. I changed the oil in mine 2500 miles ago and filled it with platinum (which is the correct spec etc) but it's a damn sight rattlier from cold than before. I think I'll be going down the Fuchs route next time have heard good things on here...

As mentioned from previous posts, you might want to check what grade oil they've used...

Running Millers XF-PD Oil here no problems so far, i've heard worn injectors can make the engine sound louder.

Wether its true or not i dont know.

same as yours a 105

I've the BJB, with the simplified EGR Valve....i think the BKC had a watercooled EGR Valve system.

Regardless of anything, get it noted at the main dealers that you have an issue, and get something in writing - if something expensive is required outside of warrenty you don't want them denying you raised the issue in time!!

Yeah cheers for that guys.I will go back to the dealer(Skoda) and see what they put in it.Its so much noisier than before and all rattly to put it bluntly. When i give it boost after 2000rpm it growls from inside the engine never did that before.I will get them to note it and see what they can do about it whilst still in warranty

Also it hasn,t used any oil since service but never did before and there is no excess smoke either.

Spoke to my Skoda dealer today and they said they put 5W/40 fully synthetic oil in and meets all VAG specs for this engine. Also they have noted i have mechanical noises now and iam awaiting a time to book it in.

Its not the airscoop vibrating under the slam panel is it? Mines vibrating like a beech at the moment.

If it's a newer 105PD engine it should be 507.0 spec oil 5w/30 not 40 which was an older spec. Ask them exactly what it is and check the spec yourself, I don't think 30-40 spec would make any difference to noise level.

Im running Millers XF-PD 5W-40 in mine, it was running the oil used for variable servicing before i got it.

I've not noticed much difference between engine volume between the two oils though. Still sounds like a trakt'er

Theres nothing vibrating its deffo an engine noise just can,t quite place from where.Start up from cold and drive and the top end is rattling like a goodun until just under the 90 degrees area. When at normal temp and above 2K rpm if i boot it a little it will go grrrr somewhere inside engine.Difficult to explain.I just hope its not getting a bit endy now especially at only 34K miles. But never done this prior to this service.

What about the dual mass flywheel? Although it is very suspicious that this came up right after the service...

Now has a brand new Single mass flywheel and clutch just done under warranty and no noises from there.

I have reported a vibration in the cabin under acceleration to the dealer on my 34k service. It happens over 2k RPM and as I do a lot of motorway driving, I notice the car has a lot of cabin noise around 3k RPM. They agree there is noise but want the car back to look into it. I personally believe that tyre noise has a part to play in this too. Will see what they say when I book it back in again in a few weeks. FYI the car is not on variable service and uses the Quantum oil brand.

Can anybody tell me if they get any engine clatter up until normal temperature on there 1.9,s ?

I dont get any clatter, but as of lately the idle is a little lumpy until its upto normal operating temperature.

Wife has a 1.9TDI (105ps) and it makes top-end no clatter at all. When cold there is a little more combustion noise than when warm, but that's normal for all Diesels IME.

The car is running with Quantum Platinum 5W-40 oil, which is what the dealers are using in the PD engines now.

They put 5W/40 in mine but when start from cold there is clatter which is underlying from the diesel noise. Its very much a cammy sound as if a few lobes are dry or even sticky hydraulic tappets if they have them

When at normal temp its still faintly there under the diesel clatter.WTH could they have done? it was fine before it was serviced
